World's First Hybrid Ferries to be Supplied with SES Equipment

These will be the world’s first hybrid diesel electric Ro Ro vehicle and passenger ferries to enter service and will be operating the Clyde and Hebrides Ferry Service from spring 2013. The green technology will be incorporated throughout the ships, supplying a minimum of 20% of the energy consumed on board. SES will be fitting a full specification of electronics on the hybrid ferries including Furuno Radars and Transas ECDIS.

Subsea Construction Vessel Contract Goes to Norway's Ulstein

The newbuilding will be delivered in the first quarter of 2014 and has a value of approximately NOK 800 million. The ship of SX121 design is to be equipped with a dynamic positioning system of the highest class (DP3). The subsea construction vessel is 130 metres long and 25 metres wide with a top speed of 14.5 knots. She will be equipped with a large active heave compensated offshore crane with 250 ton capacity at 14 metres outreach and with the winch placed below deck.

Following a recent routine departure from Seattle, WA, the Washington State Ferry’s (WSF) M/V WENATCHEE was steaming across Puget Sound to Bainbridge Island. when two passengers notified the Captain that they saw a woman go overboard. Immediately, he broadcast a “Man Overboard” alert and the crew began rescue efforts. The M/V WENATCHEE’s deck crew prepared the rescue boat for immediate launch.

Reederei Hans Peterson & Sohne is the latest German owner to select Gibdock as a repair location for a container ship, a vessel type that the Gibraltar-based yard has identified as generating high levels of workflow through the first part of 2012. The 188m long, 1997-built Westerburg operates in the Mediterranean and West African trades. As such Gibdock was an ideal location for the owners to carry out the work required.

RINA Launches Management Shareholding Scheme

International classification society RINA has introduced a management shareholding scheme which will increase group capital by Euro 12 million and give managers across the group the opportunity to share in RINA’s growth. In the first tranche almost 50 per cent of the available shares have been taken up by 90 managers, who have paid Euro 6 million for 2,840 shares, around 5 per cent of the group capital. A further tranche of 3,000 shares will be released to staff over the next four years.
