New Response Boat for US Coast Guard St Ignace

The crew of Coast Guard Station St. Ignace, Mich., has taken delivery of the station’s new 45-foot Response Boat-Medium. The station crew will be running tests on the new boat out of the St. Ignace Harbor within Lake Huron, to gain experience of its advanced capabilities. The RB-M can respond faster than previous boats of similar size and has a top speed in excess of 40 knots with advanced search capability and with an installed forward-looking infrared search technology.

Great Lakes Coal Trade Down More Than 12 Percent in July

Shipments of coal on the Great Lakes totaled 2.7 million tons in July, a slight increase – 63,000 tons – compared to June, but a drop of 12.4 percent compared to a year ago. Loadings fell even more when compared to the month’s 5-year average: 30.5 percent. Only one port range – Lake Michigan – registered an increase over last year: 37.7%. Loadings at Lake Superior docks fell 13.3 percent and shipments from Lake Erie terminals were down more than 28 percent. Overseas shipments continued in July.

Marcon International, Inc. of Coupeville, Washington has been chosen to market four concrete caisson section constructed in 1981 to drill exploration wells in the shallow Beaufort Sea. The hollow reinforced light-weight concrete caisson sections, each abt. 69m long x 15m wide x 11.5m high and weighing abt. 5,000 tonnes, were designed and constructed for the Tarsiut Island project, the first 100m diameter caisson-retained island built for drilling in the Arctic offshore.
