Rolls-Royce to Upgrade Dorothy Ann
Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine has been contracted to upgrade Interlake Steamship Company’s Tug Dorothy Ann. The 124-foot, 7,200-horsepower Z-drive tug is the largest Z-drive ATB tug built to date in North America and is mated to the barge Pathfinder. The duo is engaged in hauling bulk commodities on the Great Lakes. The upgrade will convert the Dorothy Ann’s Rolls-Royce/Ulstien azimuth thrusters from fixed-pitch to controllable-pitch propellers.

Patent Protection Granted for Hybrid Propulsion System
Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA) and Foss Maritime Company with their technology partner XeroPoint Energy, have received U.S. patent protection for its hybrid propulsion and energy management system. AKA, a Canadian system integrator and marine engineering company partnered with Foss, which owns and operates one of the largest tug and barge fleets on the U.S. West Coast, in developing this technology.

Donjon Marine, Co., Inc., a provider of multi-faceted marine services including marine salvage, heavy lift, dredging and related emergency response services, was contracted in early November 2011 to raise a 300-ton barge used as a platform for painting supplies and disposal equipment that sank in 100 feet of water after a violent Nor’Easter storm near Newport Pell Bridge in Newport, Rhode Island.

Statoil Makes Major New Oil Discovery in the Barents Sea. Statoil ASA has together with its partners Eni Norge AS and Petoro AS made a substantial oil discovery in the Havis prospect in the same licence as Skrugard (PL532) in the Barents Sea.
