X-Stream: New Deepwater Pipeline Concept
DNV has developed a new pipeline concept, called X-Stream, that can significantly reduce the cost of a deep- and ultra-deepwater gas pipeline while still complying with the strictest safety and integrity regime. X-Stream is based on established and field-proven technologies which have been innovatively arranged. X-Stream can reduce both the pipeline wall thickness and time spent on welding and installation compared to deep-water gas pipelines currently in operation.

U.S. Congress to Hold Meeting on Cruise Ship Safety
Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John L. Mica (R-FL) announced the Committee will conduct a hearing to review cruise ship safety in light of the recent Costa Concordia incident in the Mediterranean Sea. “The Costa Concordia tragedy is a wakeup call for the United States and international maritime organizations to carefully review and make certain we have in place all appropriate standards to ensure passengers’ safety on cruise ships,” Mica said.
Cruise Ship Technology: Azipod Efficiency Gains 2%
One of the original creators of podded propulsion solutions -- a technology routinely featured on the world's largest cruise ships -- for the maritime market announced another breakthrough which improves efficiency further. ABB reports that recent modifications to its Azipod propulsion unit frame design have seen hydrodynamic efficiency improved by more than two percent. The modifications include a newly optimized Azipod fin shape and a new pod cap structure, called Xtail.

Green Light to Skuld
The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has given the green light to the plan for development and operation (PDO) of Skuld, a fast-track development tied in to the Norne field in the Norwegian Sea. Skuld is Statoil’s fifth approved fast-track PDO, and the largest fast-track development so far. All of these fields are scheduled to come on stream by year-end 2012/early 2013.In combination, the approved fast-tracks are expected to produce almost 90.000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2014…

P&O Installs MPM System Upgrade
P&O Ferries install MPM Hibernation system upgrade. UK ferry operator P&O Ferries has recently taken delivery of Marine Software's MPM Hibernation upgrade for vessels "European Seaway" and "Pride of Dover" after deciding to put these vessels into lay-by. The MPM - Marine Planned Maintenance product was originally installed during a fleet wide software purchase in 2005 for 18 vessels, along with Marine Software's centralised Spare Parts, Procurement package and CODA finance system integration.
