USNS John Ericsson Rescues Five Lost at Sea
Civil service mariners aboard Military Sealift Command fleet replenishment oiler USNS John Ericsson (T-AO 194) rescued five people lost at sea in a small boat near the Solomon Islands May 18. While conducting routine operations in the Solomon Sea May 17, Ericsson received notification from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centers in Australia and Papua New Guinea at about 11 p.m., to be on the lookout for a missing commercial vessel. NASSCO Begins Dry Docking Portion of $20M Repair
SAN DIEGO – General Dynamics NASSCO has begun the dry docking portion of a $20 million repair effort for the USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52). The 610-foot amphibious warship has been docked at NASSCO’s Berth 4 for above the waterline repairs since January 24. This next phase in the ship’s repair will involve removing the ship from the water and placing it in dry dock to enable extensive work to be performed to the vessel’s shafting system and exterior hull.

CNO Admiral Roughead Honored as “Seamaster of 2011”
On May 17 U.S. Navy CNO Admiral Gary Roughead was awarded the “Seamaster of 2011” award, an honor conferred by Marine Technology Reporter magazine at a special reception in the Admiral’s honor at the OceanTech Expo (www.oceantechexpo.com), held in Newport, Rhode Island. In accepting the award, Admiral Roughead delivered a 30 minute speech, discussing the Navy’s future technological needs, specifically engaging the crowd of more than 200 in a discussion of subsea robotics capabilities and needs.
Hamworthy Lands 11-vessel China Order
Hamworthy has won a contract to supply pump room systems for 11 vessels to be delivered to the China Shipping Group (CSG). The first three systems are destined for installation on three CSG 112,000 dwt aframax newbuildings, to be constructed at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC). The remaining eight systems are to be supplied to product carriers being built at Guangzhou Shipyard International, (GSI).
ULSTEIN Sells To Island Offshore
Ulstein Verft has sold the construction vessel Karianne of SX121 type design to Island Offshore. The vessel was completed on time from ULSTEIN in the fourth quarter of 2010. The vessel was originally contracted by the shipping company Marine Subsea, which could not to take delivery of her after completion. CEO Gunvor Ulstein says she is very pleased that this advanced construction vessel will be in the hands of an experienced and established shipping company.

Bollinger, Bouchard Contract for Tank Barges
Bollinger Marine Fabricators, L.L.C., Amelia, La., a Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. company, has signed a contract for the new construction of a 55,000 barrel OPA’90 compliant tank barge with Bouchard Transportation Co., Inc., Melville, N.Y. Shell Moves Forward with Floating LNG
Shell announces final investment decision on Prelude Floating LNG project in Australia. The Board of Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) has taken the final investment decision on the Prelude Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) Project in Australia (100% Shell), building the world’s first FLNG facility. Moored far out to sea, some 200 kilometres from the nearest land in Australia, the FLNG facility will produce gas from offshore fields, and liquefy it onboard by cooling.
MOL Table Top Drill for Bulk Carrier Collision
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL, President: Koichi Muto) today announced the completion of a table top drill based on the scenario of the MOL-owned and operated bulk carrier Mona Linden being involved in a collision that resulted in flooding and oil spill off Takamatsu, Inland sea, Japan. Diamond Offshore Third Order for Ultra-Deepwater Drillship
Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc. (NYSE:DO) today announced that a subsidiary, Diamond Offshore Drilling Limited, has exercised its option to build a third ultra-deepwater drillship with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. with delivery scheduled for the second quarter of 2014. Total cost, including commissioning, spares and project management, is estimated to be approximately $610 million and is anticipated to be paid out of cash flow and available funds.
