The US Army Corps of Engineers operates two hopper dredges on the west coast of the U.S. to keep shipping channels open. The largest and most modern of them is the Essayons, built by Bath Iron works in Bath, Maine in 1982. Its aging power plant has been replaced by eight state-of-the-art Cat marine engines totaling more than 15,000 kW. The 350 ft long Essayons is based in Portland, Oregon. Its annual schedule includes work in harbours between Alaska and California, as well as Hawaii.

Donjon Marine, Co., Inc., a provider of multi-faceted marine services including marine salvage, heavy lift, dredging and related emergency response services, was awarded a contract on March 24, 2009 for the wreck removal and disposal of the remnants of the M/V Fedra. On October 10, 2008, during a significant storm, the M/V Fedra grounded and subsequently sank off the eastern side of Europa Point in Gibraltar in approximately 20 feet of water.

Netherlands-based salvage specialists Multraship Salvage and Mammoet Salvage have successfully completed the removal of the wreck of a floating dock which sank in June 2007 at the Viktor Lenac shipyard, Rijeka, Croatia. The 541 ft Floating Dry Dock No. 7 weighed 7,000 tonnes and sank in 72 ft of water after an electrical power supply failure. Two previous refloating attempts had failed and after a thorough survey and testing of tanks it was decided that refloating of the dock was not feasible.

Three months after a massive coal ash spill, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has begun dredging the ashen byproduct of coal-generated electricity from the Emory River using an Ellicott Series 370 "Dragon" dredge. Jacobs Engineering is the prime contractor for this first phase of the project. The Ellicott 370 “Dragon” began sucking up ash from the river April 2, TVA officials said during a news briefing.
