Van der Velden Delivers Largest Ever BARKE Rudders
The Oceangoing vessels division of Van der Velden Marine Systems has delivered the largest in-house designed BARKE rudders in its history. The two flap-type rudders have been installed onboard the 30,000 m³ trailing suction hopper dredger Congo River. Built for the DEME Group, the trailing suction hopper dredger was launched on 21 January at the IHC Merwede shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel (NL).

Van Oord Commissions Jack-Up for Offshore Wind Market
Sietas is to be the first German shipyard to develop and build a jack-up vessel used for offshore wind farm installation. The order, which was signed in Hamburg, comes from Dutch-based marine contractor Van Oord, working on dredging, offshore and marine engineering projects worldwide. In addition, Van Oord has placed an option for a second ship of the same type. No details have been released as to the purchase price.
Panama Canal Partnership with Long Beach
Panama Canal Authority (ACP) Administrator/CEO Alberto Alemán Zubieta and Port of Long Beach (POLB) Executive Director Richard D. Steinke signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Panama aimed at generating new business and economic growth and promoting international trade between Long Beach and the East Coast of Latin America via the Panama Canal. Both parties asserted their commitment to mutual cooperation at the official ceremony, which took place at the ACP’s Administration Building.
CSD Al Jarraf Launched at ASL Shipyard, Singapore
Al Jarraf, meaning “dredging vessel” in Arabic, was launched on Wednesday October 27 at the ASL Shipyard in Singapore. VOSTA LMG is responsible for the design, supplied the components and developed the dredging technology together with MEDCO and DEME. VOSTA LMG built the main dredging components in Asia, 100% to European standards. Owner of the vessel is Middle East Dredging Company (MEDCO), a partnership between DEME, United Development Company (UDC), and the Qatari government.

Officials Inspect Model of New Panama Canal Locks
Steadily moving forward with expansion, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) reached another milestone. Oct. 18, the Canal’s Advisory Board and Board of Directors inspected the physical model of the new set of locks in Lyon, France. Built by Compagnie National du Rhône's (CNR) Hydraulic Laboratory, the functional model used a ship that is 12.2 meters long to perform the lock filling and emptying tests.

Panama Canal Authority, Model of D'Artagnan Dredger

USACE Completes Dredge Hurley Extension
The Corps of Engineers Memphis District Ensley Engineer Yard (EEY), in partnership with the Corps of Engineers Marine Design Center (MDC) in Philadelphia, Pa., completed the lengthening of the Dredge Hurley by 48-feet. The project increased the dredge’s length from 305 to 353 feet, making it one of the largest vessels on the river and increased the dredge’s dredging depth from 40 to a maximum of 75 feet.
