Great Lakes Coal Trade Down Almost 25 Percent in August
Shipments of coal on the Great Lakes totaled 2,956,930 net tons in August, a slight dip compared to July (131,000 tons), but a decrease of almost 25 percent (959,000 tons) compared to a year ago.
LCA: Great Lakes Iron Ore Trade Up 9 Percent in August
Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 6,551,329 tons in August, a decrease of 7 percent from July, but an increase of 9 percent compared to a year ago. August loadings also were up 24.6 percent compared to the month’s 5-year average. Shipments from U.S. ports totaled 5.8 million tons, an increase of 14.2 percent compared to a year ago. However, loadings at Canadian ports dipped more than 20 percent.

Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 7,046,156 tons in July, an increase of 12.2 percent over June, and an increase of 18 percent compared to a year ago. July loadings also were up 12-plus percent compared to the month’s 5-year average. Shipments from U.S. ports totaled 6.3 million tons, an increase of nearly 21 percent compared to a year ago. However, loadings at Canadian ports were virtually unchanged – 746,887 tons.
ULSTEIN Establishes New Subsidiary
ULSTEIN has recently established a new company, Ulstein IDEA Equipment Solutions. This company will take over the activities of former IDEA Heavy Equipment b.v, a Dutch company that ULSTEIN has cooperated with in recent years. Following an agreement between the Government of India and the Government of Sri Lanka, RESOLVE Salvage and Fire (Asia) Pte Ltd., a subsidiary of American-based RESOLVE Marine Group, Inc., has commenced the removal of six vessel wrecks that were sunk in Kankesanthurai Harbor (KKS) between 1994 and 1996 during the LTTE conflict. Situated on the northern coast of Sri Lanka, the harbor was badly damaged in the conflict and has since been closed.
