U.S.-Flag Lakers' October Cargo Up 3 PCT
U.S.-flag Great Lakes freighters (“lakers”) carried 9.8 million tons of dry-bulk cargo in October, a weather-driven decrease of 3 percent compared to September, but an increase of 3.2 percent compared to a year ago. The October float was 5 percent below the month’s 5-year average, but the decrease partially reflects the significant weather-related delays the fleet experienced. Iron ore cargos for the steel industry increased 12.8 percent compared to a year ago.

Sections of the Erie Canal and the Oswego Canal will temporarily reopen for a two-week period that begins Sunday, November 20, the New York State Canal Corporation announced. The eastern portion of the Erie Canal has been closed to navigation in the Mohawk Valley since major flooding in late August damaged several canal structures.
Great Lakes Iron Ore Trade Up 13 PCT in October
Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 5.7 million tons in October, a decrease of 11 percent from September, but an increase of 13 percent compared to a year ago. October loadings also were up 7.2 percent compared to the month’s 5-year average. Shipments from U.S. ports totaled 5.1 million tons, an increase of 18 percent compared to a year ago. However, loadings at Canadian ports slipped 16.3 percent from a year ago.

Great Lakes Coal Trade Down in October
Shipments of coal on the Great Lakes totaled 3 million net tons in October, a decrease of nearly 11 percent compared to September, and a drop of 9.6 percent compared to a year ago. The trade slumped even more – 20.7 percent – when compared to the 5-year average for October. Loadings at Lake Superior ports fell to 1.5 million tons, a decrease of 21.6 percent compared to a year ago. Shipments from Lake Michigan terminals rose 40 percent for the second straight month.

IHC Merwede Rents Out First IHC Beaver Dredger
IHC Merwede has entered the international rental market with its standard IHC Beaver dredgers and DMC work boats. The company has identified a demand in the market for vessels and equipment that may only be used for a relatively short period of time. In August, the first dredger – an IHC Beaver® 40 – was rented out to a contractor in Europe. The dredger was easily loaded on to trucks and transported to the dredging site, where it was quickly deployed by a team of IHC Merwede engineers.

LCA: Lakes Limestone Trade Up 14 Percent in August
Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3.8 million net tons in August, an increase of 4 percent over July, and an increase of 14 percent compared to a year ago. Shipments were also just about even with August’s 5-year average. Shipments from U.S. quarries increased 22 percent compared to a year ago and slightly bettered the month’s 5-year average. Loadings at Canadian quarries were off roughly 15 percent compared to both a year ago and August’s 5-year average.
