WRDA to the Wise
May 15, 2013 was a very good day for the nation’s barge and towing operators, as well as shippers of grain, coal, chemicals, petroleum products, aggregate materials, and agri-input products. It was also a good day for our nation’s economy and for its consumers. The Senate passed, by a vote of 83-14, a long-overdue Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), last reauthorized in 2007. Six years may not seem like a long time to await action on Capitol Hill.

Dredging Begins at Port of Liverpool
Work on Liverpool2, a new terminal at the Port of LIverpool, has begun. More than one million cubic meters of material will now be moved by dredgers to clear a deep-water channel at the Port of Liverpool (United Kingdom), operated by Peel Ports. The dredging work – funded by a £35 million U.K. Government Regional Growth Fund grant – will create a 16.5-meter deep berthing pocket to secure access to the developing Liverpool2 project.
China's Pingtan to Buy 46 Fishing Vessels

Boskalis Win New Russian Port Contract
Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) announce a contract award for the the Bronka Port project in St Petersburg. The contract was signed at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum in attendance of the Russian Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Arkady Dvorkovich and the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mr. Mark Rutte. The project involves the reclamation of land for the construction of the new port facility 'Bronka' in St Petersburg.
IHC Merwede Secures New Orders
IHC Merwede announced that it has recently secured orders to the value of €125 million for a wide range of new cutter suction dredgers (CSDs) and related equipment. The latest sales agreements confirmed by the company include a new custom-built CSD and a further 12 units that will be supplied by IHC Beaver Dredgers. The contract for the custom-built CSD has been entrusted to IHC Merwede by Huta Marine Works for the design, engineering and construction of an innovative self-propelled vessel.

Damen Delivers Modular Cutter Suction Dredger
On June 1, the Cutter Suction Dredger Susanna II was handed over to its owner, Dutch dredging contractor Verboon Maasland. All members of the Verboon team were present with their families to celebrate the completion of the vessel and inspect the dredger: a renewed acquaintance. The Susanna II is the second stationary dredger for Verboon Maasland. The first one, Susanna, was also built by Damen Dredging – yet this was some 32 years ago.
Damen Dredger Starts Something in Africa
The new Damen CSD250 dredger delivered to Nigeria has already started on making its own pond, eventually to become a canal. The CSD250 has started creating a canal, which will flow eventually in the Benin River, and through to the Atlantic Ocean. The canal is initiated by Ossiomo Investments, the owner of the industrial park. On the park a fertilizer plant will be constructed, amongst other petrochemical plants.
New Self Unloading Ship Calls at Port of Redwood City
New bulk ship CSL Tecumseh made its maiden voyage to the Port of Redwood City on Wednesday, May 29. Named after a respected war chief of the Shawnee Indians in the early 1800s, Tecumseh brought 40,000 tons of construction aggregates from the Orca Quarry in British Columbia. The material was delivered to Cemex Aggregates, a major port tenant. This is an essential material for ready-mix concrete plants from Santa Rosa to San Jose.
L.A. Port Extends Major Lease Agreement with Chinese Shippers
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced the signing of an agreement with Yang Ming, a marine transport company, to extend its lease at the Port of Los Angeles for an additional nine years. Yang Ming’s current lease at the West Basin Container Terminal ends in 2021; with this agreement, it extends to 2030 and represents additional port revenues of between $365 and $525 million, depending on cargo volumes.
