U.S. The latest statistical roundup of the U.S. flag fleet (2012) shows some interesting trends. We know that the U.S. blue water, deep draft fleet continues to dwindle in size and numbers – albeit some exciting recent orders for tankers and containerships. But virtually 99 percent of our commercial fleet is now represented by inland and coastal pushboats, barges and offshore service vessels. Or, in other words, the demographic represented by the readership of MarineNews magazine.
Boskalis Sells Stake in Middle East Maritime Contractors
Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) has sold its 40% stake in Archirodon Group N.V. Boskalis explain that the possible sale had already been announced in November 2012 after Boskalis was approached by the party in question from the Middle East. The equity interest was partly sold to this party and partly to the existing 60% co-shareholder. Boskalis received a cash sum of USD 190 million for its 40% stake, resulting in a book gain of several tens of millions of euros.

UK Shipyard Wins Long-term Dredger Drydock Contract
A&P Tees, part of A&P North East, has won an exclusive contract from UK dredge contractor CEMEX UK Marine, part of the CEMEX UK Group, for the drydocking of the company’s three trailing suction hopper dredgers over a five-year period. Liebherr Grows New Zealand Market Share
A recent order from the Port of Lyttleton is the latest in a series of contracts that has seen Liebherr Container Cranes expand on an already significant presence in New Zealand’s North and South Islands, the company said. The Port of Lyttleton’s most recent order for a super post panamax ship to shore crane and four straddle carriers, will see the number of Liebherr straddle carriers in the Port of Lyttelton grow to eight and brings the total number of ship to shore cranes at the port to three.
IHC Merwede President Appointed SEA Europe Chairman
The European Ships and Maritime Equipment Association (SEA Europe) has announced that IHC Merwede’s President, Govert Hamers, will succeed Lars Gørvell-Dahll as Chairman in October 2013. Mr. Gørvell-Dahll’s will step down midway through his tenure to become the Managing Director of the maritime arm of the Federation of Norwegian Industries. SEA Europe was jointly founded in Brussels last year by European shipbuilders, ship repairers and maritime suppliers.

Port of Houston Tonnage and Revenue Up
Tonnage is up this year at the Port of Houston Authority, with container tonnage through May up by 9%, Executive Director Len Waterworth reported at Tuesday's meeting of the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority. Waterworth also reported that May operating revenue was at an all-time high of $20 million, up 4% or $800,000. This marked the first time in Port Authority history that operating revenue has exceeded $20 million.
