The Crossover ball joint is a new dredge ball joint that provides optimal flow performance, its manufacturer VOSTA LMG said. Through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) the frictional losses and turbulence have been reduced. Conventional dredge ball joints act like a ball valve when tilted, causing the flow area to reduce and frictional losses to increase. The patented Crossover design incorporates two wear liners which are shaped to provide full flow area in any tilted position.

The rise in Great Lakes water levels has yet to translate into full loads for the U.S.-flag freighters moving iron ore, coal, limestone, cement and other cargos. Vessels continue to routinely leave port with less than a full load on board. The largest iron ore cargo moved by a U.S.-flag laker through the Soo Locks in June totaled 69,576 tons. The record iron ore cargo for the âHead-of-the-Lakes Tradeâ is 72,300 tons and was carried in 1997, a period of near record-high water levels.

Demand for Coastal and Transoceanic ATBs Grows

Along the way, ATBs gain speed, efficiency, safety â and popularity. Operators of articulated tugs and barges, or ATBs, say they like the maneuverability, weather reliability, stability, speed of these units, and the manner in which the tug pushes the barge. As a marine transportation concept, they can also simply be described as versatile. ATBs move petroleum, chemicals, coal, grain, containerized cargo and rail cars for customers on the U.S. coasts, rivers, the Great Lakes and overseas.
