FLNG deal-making has been sporadic since Woodside Petroleum at the end of 2013 delayed a final investment decision for the giant Browse FLNG project off Northwest Australia. The previous year had seen go-aheads for most of the floating liquefied natural gas projects (FLNG) underway today, including Shell’s Prelude FLNG — Woodside’s choice, it seems, of a liquefaction solution for fields 200 kilometers offshore. Yet Prelude, “the first project out”, might not be first to produce.

Dredging specialist Jan De Nul Group is set to further expand its modern fleet with a self-propelled, cutter-suction dredger to be built at Croatian shipyard, Uljanik Brodogradiliste in Pula. The vessel, currently designated JDN8069, will feature one MAN 14V48/60CR and two MAN 9L48/60CR engines as well as three step-up, RENK Rheine gearboxes for a diesel-electric plant. RENK will also deliver the gearboxes for the cutter-head drive as well as for the dredger and booster pumps.

Silt Deposits Reduce Mississippi River Draft

Heavy silt deposits in the Mississippi River Delta caused by recent high upstream river levels have led to a reduction from 47 to 45 feet for the maximum recommended draft for vessels using the Southwest Pass, Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) advised. The Southwest Pass is the primary shipping channel on the Mississippi River, with a variety of cargos entering and leaving the river. It is the only channel that can be used by deep draft vessels.
