The naming and launch ceremony of the trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Jun Yang 1 took place on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Royal IHC’s shipyard in Kinderdijk, The Netherlands. Van Oord’s New Dredger Named
A naming ceremony was held at Damen Dredging Equipment in Nijkerk on November 16 for the second of Van Oord’s Damen Cutter Suction Dredgers (CSD) 650, the Mangystau, due to be delivered in the first week of January. The ceremony was attended by members of the Van Oord and Damen families. Damen received the first order for a CSD650 from dredging and marine contractor Van Oord at the end of 2014; the Ural River.

Crowley Breaks Ground on San Juan Terminal
Crowley Puerto Rico Services, Inc. has broken ground on a $48.5-million construction project for a new pier at its Isla Grande Terminal in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the company announced. The project includes the development of a new 900-foot-long, 114-foot-wide concrete pier and all associated dredging needed to accommodate Crowley’s two new liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered, Commitment Class ships, which are scheduled for delivery in 2017.
Port of Hamburg Reports Cargo Downturn
Germany’s largest universal port reported the effects of weakened Chinese foreign trade plus the steep downturn in trade with Russia during the first nine months of the year. Totaling 104.6 million tons, seaborne cargo throughput in Hamburg was down 4.8 percent from last year, despite higher bulk cargo handling in the first three quarters of 34.3 million, up 8.7 percent. Meanwhile, container throughput in the first nine months totaled 6.7 million TEU, down by 9.2 percent.
Video: Dredgers at Work in Latin America
A major port in Latin America is in the midst of an expansion project to increase its container handling capacity and accommodate Post-Panamax vessels. Commissioned for this project are two Ellicott cutter suction dredges, which are both currently at work deepening the berthing area for the new terminal. The first Ellicott dredge, a Series 370 with a 300 x 250 mm pump and 328 kW of total installed power, has been working at this port for over six months.
MTG Highlights Dredging Solutions at Europort
MTG, a Spanish company specializing in the design and production of wear parts for earthmoving machinery, has introduced its latest solutions for the dredging market at the Europort exhibition in Rotterdam. According to MTG, its main innovation is DMet, a hammerless system that aims to improve productivity and increase protection of cutter and hopper dredgers, even in demanding applications such as hard rock.
