Fire-fighting ASD Tugs Sail to Argentina

At the end of June, two Damen ASD Tugs 2810 set sail from Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania to Puerto General de San Martin (Argentina) for towing, mooring, and fire-fighting operations in the Argentinian region around Rosario on the Paraná river. Built at Damen Galati Shipyards (Romania), the vessels will be delivered on time, having met the expectations of Cooperativa De Trabajos Portuarios Limitada de San Martín.

Dutch offshore engineer Boskalis said it was cutting 650 jobs worldwide and culling 24 vessels in response to what it called drastic changes in the company's outlook caused by low energy and commodity prices. Trelleborg’s engineered products operation is now manufacturing a pre-bend rubber dredging hose in China – the only one of its kind available in the country, according to the manufacturer. Currently exclusive to Trelleborg’s Chinese manufacturing operation, all of Trelleborg’s pre-bend rubber dredging hoses manufactured in China will be reinforced with armored rings, thereby strengthening the hose and extending its use-life.

APM Terminals Pipavav (Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd) reports it has completed its capacity expansion project on time and within budget, increasing its annual container throughput handling capacity from 850,000 TEUs to 1.35 million TEUs. As part of the expansion plan, APM Terminals invested around Rs. 400 crore. The investment included buying new STS cranes, strengthening the existing berth, dredging and the improvement of the container yard and internal roads at the port.

Coast Guard to Remove Some Navigation Aids in Virginia

The U.S. Coast Guard is scheduled to discontinue 166 navigational aids within the Virginia Inside Passage (VIP) due to shoaling and other navigational safety concerns throughout the area. Fixed aids to navigation will be removed as Coast Guard resources permit over the next several years and will be listed under an Advance Notice in future Local Notice to Mariners. The decision follows a 2013 proposal, which identified 241 navigational aids for removal.

Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) has taken delivery of the Sauger III, a custom floating pump station by Damen Shipyards Group for supporting dredging operations. Situated 110 km inland on the River Elbe and with a tidal range of 3.6 meters, the Hamburg Port requires regularly dredging like most ports. 37 metres in length and 10 meters wide, the station features a powerful, dual pump installation and comfortable accommodation for the crew.

The Port of Caen/Chamber of Commerce & Industry Caen Normandy (Chambre de Commerce et d’industrie de Caen Normandie) has placed an order for a Damen ASD Tug 2810. This follows Damen winning a public tender on December 8, 2015. Caen Normandy Chamber of Commerce & Industry has a port concession in both the Port of Caen Ouistreham and Cherbourg. The new Damen vessel will be deployed in the latter, hence its name Cherbourg 1.
