![](https://images.marinelink.com/images/maritime/w200h200c/-71555.jpg)
In the United States, transportation infrastructure is the bedrock of our supply chains. Ports and waterways in the United States moved over 2.3 billion tons of goods in 2014. A robust maritime infrastructure to support such ports and waterways helps goods to move freely and aid in more flow of trade and ultimately greater economic stimulus. Port authorities and waterways commissions are always seeking…

Louisiana Dredging Outlook
![Photo: Magnolia Dredge](https://images.marinelink.com/images/maritime/w200h200c/photo-magnolia-dredge-71501.jpg)
When maritime stakeholders think about dredging, they typically first conjure up visions of harbor deepening projects to accommodate those giant, post-Panamax boxships. Conversely, inland players hope for maintenance dredging in the heartland to keep the nation’s 31,000 cargo barges afloat as they head for the coast. But, there is much more to it than that. In Louisiana, dredging, of course, keeps Louisiana's waterways open for navigation…
Coral Reefs: A Unique Natural Resource
![© vlad61_61 / Adobe Stock](https://images.marinelink.com/images/maritime/w200h200c/vlad6161-adobe-stock-71295.jpg)
Stony corals are marine invertebrates with somewhat unique life cycles. For the most part, they reproduce sexually, broadcasting gametes into the water. Often, an entire coral colony or reef will spawn on the same night. Coral may also reproduce asexually by producing genetically identical polyps. Fertilized gametes drift in the current until, hopefully, they alight on a hard surface like a rock suitable for attachment.

Offshore Innovation: A Real ‘Riverboat’
![Image: Vard](https://images.marinelink.com/images/maritime/w200h200c/image-vard-71198.jpg)
Central Asia is a booming oil region not far from the Persian Gulf. Energy companies ply the big lake to rack up staggering barrel counts at elephantine oilfields with names like Tengiz (Kazakhstan) or Kashagan (Azerbaijan). Painstaking, oil-fueled nation-building is underway across an oil province, where very shallow water hinders plant and equipment moves by platform supply vessels. Until now — new module-carrying vessels…

![File photo: ACP](https://images.marinelink.com/images/maritime/w200h200c/file-photo-acp-71150.jpg)
As the Panama Canal’s newly operational expanded lane helps set monthly tonnage records, the project’s impacts are being felt along the U.S. East Coast. Effects of the canal’s expansion are reverberating well-beyond Panama’s shores, as ports around the world are in varying stages of work to deepen and widen their channels to accommodate the growing number of Neopanamax vessels that can now transit the canal.
Cutterhead Shaft Bearing as Good as New After 10 Years of Dredging

After 10 years and more than 100,000 operating hours dredging up silt, sand, rocks and stones in some of the toughest marine environments imaginable, the Thordon Composite bearing installed on the Al Mirfa’s dredge cutter head shaft has emerged unscathed. In drydock where the NMDC-owned dredger is being upgraded, Thordon Bearings’ Dubai-based distributor, Ocean Power International, expected that even the ‘unbreakable’ might need replacing after such demanding workloads, but it didn’t.
