HHI Orders MHI-MME Ultra Steam Turbine Plants for LNG Carriers

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co., Ltd. (MHI-MME), a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has received orders from Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) of Korea for four Ultra Steam Turbine (UST) plants to be installed in four LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers HHI is to construct for Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), the state-owned oil and gas provider in Malaysia.

DNV GL to Class LNG Helgoland Ferry

The new Fassmer built Helgoland ferry for AG EMS, will be constructed under the supervision of classification society DNV GL. The nearly 80m long vessel will be the first German flagged newbuilding to be equipped with an propulsion system designed to operate primarily with liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel. Using LNG as fuel allows the vessel to make significant cuts to its emissions to the air, bringing it into compliance with incoming regulations to protect the environment.

Increased emission legislation is impacting on the maritime industry and the development of LNG as a fuel is growing at a pace. The marine engineers and designers at Houlder have recognized this and are developing specialist equipment as a result. An example, announced this week at the Lloydâs Maritime Academy LNG Bunkering Seminar, is a standalone processing unit that efficiently manages boil-off gas on board bunker vessels and client ships.
Freeport Facility to be Authorized to Export More U.S. LNG

The Energy Department has conditionally authorized Freeport LNG Expansion, L.P. and FLNG Liquefaction, LLC (Freeport) to export additional volumes of domestically produced liquefied natural gas (LNG) to countries that do not have a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States from the Freeport LNG Terminal in Quintana Island, Texas. Freeport previously received approval to export 1.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day (Bcf/d) of LNG from this facility to non-FTA countries on May 17âŚ

General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, has entered into a contract with Seabulk Tankers, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of SEACOR Holdings Inc. for the design and construction of a 50,000 deadweight ton LNG-conversion-ready product carrier with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity, plus an option for one additional vessel. Construction is due to begin in 2015, with delivery scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2016.
Wärtsilä to Launch Dual-fuel Engine Series

Wärtsilä successfully conducted full scale testing on gas of its low-speed two-stroke dual-fuel engine and is now introducing a full new range of engines based on its established and well-proven low pressure technology. The first engine utilizing this technology, the Wärtsilä RT-flex50DF, will be available for delivery in the third quarter of 2014. Other engines from the company's new Generation X series will follow and will be available for delivery during 2015 and 2016.

Matson Navigation Company, Inc., a U.S. carrier in the Pacific Ocean, announced an order today for two MAN B&W, 7S90ME-GI dual fuel engines with liquefied natural gas (LNG) capability to be installed aboard two new âAloha Classâ 3,600 TEU containerships ordered last week from with Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Inc. (APSI). The deal includes an option for three further vessels. The dual fuel engines, each developing 42,700 kW, are reportedly the largest ever ordered in terms of power output.
Matson Newbuildings Opt for MAN Dual-fuel Engines

Matson Navigation Company has placed an order for two 3,600 TEU container ships, powered by two MAN B&W 7S90ME-GI dual-fuel engines. The deal includes an option for three further vessels. The engines are the largest dual-fuel engines ever ordered in terms of power output with each engine developing a massive 42,700 kW. The ME-GI engines and associated systems will be manufactured by MAN Diesel Turboâs licensee, Hyundai, and will be able to use either HFO, MDO or LNG bunker fuel.

Earlier this week, Commissioner William P. Doyle met with Japanese public and private sector officials to discuss U.S. natural gas, exports, and the Panama Canal. Japan is the world's largest importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The country has relied on imported natural gas for decades as part of its energy portfolio. However, the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, disabled the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
