Keppel FELS Limited is on track to deliver Gold Star, the first of two DSS 38 deepwater rigs to Brazilian operator, Queiroz Galvão Óleo e Gás (QGOG) later this year. Progressing on time and within budget, Gold Star will be the first DSS 38 rig to enter the market and support Petrobras's exploration and production activities. Gold Star was named today by Lady Sponsor, Mrs Fiona Steane, spouse of Mr Christopher Steane, Global Head for Structured Finance of the rig’s financiers, ING Bank.

On August 23 the Rio Blanco was christened at Burchardkai in thePort of Hamburg. This is the fourth new vessel in a series totaling six container ships of identical design for Hamburg Süd. All of them have a slot capacity of 5,900 TEU, making them the largest vessels in the shipping group’s fleet. The naming ceremony for the Rio Blanco was performed by Nina-Maria Oetker, wife of Dr. h.c. August Oetker, General Partner of Dr. August Oetker KG and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Hamburg Süd.

NATO Counter-Piracy Enhanced Mandate
NATO’s contribution to international efforts to combat piracy off the Horn of Africa and in the Gulf of Aden entered a new phase on 17 August after the North Atlantic Council (NAC) approved Operation Ocean Shield. This new mission builds on the experience gained during Operation Allied Protector, NATO’s previous counter-piracy mission, and develops a distinctive NATO role based on the broad strength of the Alliance by adopting a more comprehensive approach to counter-piracy efforts.

Newest U.S. Navy Logistics Ship Launched
USNS Matthew Perry, which will be the newest ship in the U.S. Navy's Lewis and Clark-class of dry cargo/ammunition ships, was christened and launched Aug.16, during a late afternoon ceremony at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego. The ship, designated T-AKE 9, is expected to be delivered to the Navy's Military Sealift Command in early 2010 following a series of tests and sea trials. The 689-ft ship slid into the water for the first time as Hester G.
Port of Hamburg Cargo Remains Below Last Year
In the first half of 2009, the Port of Hamburg handled a total of 54.2 million metric tons of seagoing cargo. This represents a drop of 23.7 percent in comparison to the same period in the previous year. Port of Hamburg Marketing, the marketing organization for the Port of Hamburg, reported a volume of 30 million tons of imported cargo, 26.5 percent less than in the last year. Exports were hit less hard, with a total volume of 24.2 tons, falling only 19.9 percent.
