Remotely Operated Locks: Progress, But Still Under Study
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is evaluating remote operation of locks within the U.S. inland waterways system. Timetables are hazy, but the Corps plans to include remote operations capabilities during rehabilitations or new construction, in the work planned, for example, in the Upper Ohio Navigation Project, part of the USACEās Pittsburgh District.In fact, the first install project is being readied at Lock & Dam 4 on the Monongahela River.

Kooiman Building Hegemann Dredging's New Hopper Dredge
The Netherlands-based shipbuilder Kooiman Marine Group is building a new trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) for German Detlef Hegemann Aktiengesellschaft. The 1,500-cubic-meter dredger is designed to execute multiple types of dredging activities at specific locations. Hegemann V is scheduled for delivery in July 2022.The Hegemann V was developed by Kooiman Engineering, part of Kooiman Marine Group, in close collaboration with Hegemann Dredging.
Conrad Lays Keel for Great Lakes' New Hopper Dredge
Conrad Shipyard hosted a keel laying ceremony for a new 6,500 cubic yard trailing suction hopper dredge it is building for Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company (GLDD). Delivery is scheduled before the end of the first quarter of 2023.The dredge will feature two 800mm suction pipes and will be able to dredge at depths of up to 100 feet. The vessel has principal dimensions of approximately 346 feet in length, 69 feet in breadth and 23 feet in depth, and total installed horsepower of 16,500.
Bollinger Buys Gulf Islandās Shipyard Facilities
Lockport, La.-based Bollinger Shipyards has acquired Gulf Island Fabricationās shipyard facilities in nearby Houma for approximately $28.6 million.The purchased site encompasses 437 acres on the west bank of the Houma Navigation Canal, of which 283 acres is unimproved land that is available for expansion. The facility includes 18,000 square feet of administrative and operations facilities, 160,000 square feet of covered fabrication facilities and 20,000 square feet of warehouse facilities.

Galveston, Texas-based dredging contractor Callan Marine said it has promoted Micah Morris to operations manager of its brown water division.Morris most recently served as project manager on the brown water projects.
