OSRL Introduces Well Capping Equipment
Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL), the global oil spill response co-operative funded by more than 160 oil and energy companies, has announced the opening of a new Base in Saldanha Bay, South Africa, to support regional and global response operations. The Base houses cutting edge well capping equipment designed to shut-in an uncontrolled subsea well, marking a major advancement in Africa’s oil spill response capability.
Maersk Drilling Name First Ultra-Deepwater Drillship
The new drillship was named 'Maersk Viking' by Mrs. Nathalie Newman, wife of Mr. Harry E. Newman Jr., ExxonMobil Global Drilling Manager in a ceremony at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard in Geoje-Si, South Korea. Maersk Viking is the first in a series of four ultra deepwater drillships to enter Maersk Drilling’s rig fleet. The four drillships represent a total investment of USD 2.6bn and will be delivered from the SHI shipyard in late 2013 and 2014.

EU, Seychelles Complete Search and Rescue Exercise
On 26 September, the Seychelles Peoples Defense Force, Coast Guard and Air Force, together with the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia Operation Atalanta and EUCAP Nestor, carried out a search and rescue exercise in Seychelles waters. HMAS Newcastle has handed over security operations for Operation SLIPPER in support of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) in the Middle East to HMAS Melbourne. Newcastle has provided maritime security around the Horn of Africa, conducted counter-piracy and anti-smuggling operations in the Gulf of Aden and executed counter-terrorism activities since May 28, 2013. Romar Award Frontier £650,000 for Personnel Management
Aberdeenshire-based oilfield service company Romar International has awarded the contract of the management of its offshore workforce to Frontier International, an Aberdeen based international oil and gas recruitment company. The personnel management contract, worth £650,000 in year one will require Frontier International to provide the management and logistics for up to 35 offshore operational personnel to support Romar’s North Sea and international operations.

Downhole video technology specialist EV has recorded significant international growth by opening a new base in the Middle East, aiming to be the market leader in the region by the end of the year, estimating more than £1.25million ($2 million) in revenue in the region during its first year of operation. EV, a company in downhole video applications for the oil and gas industry, has seen rapid international expansion over recent years.
LNG Capital Expenditure
A strong continuation in the recovery of LNG expenditure is underway worldwide, driven by a growing demand for natural gas. The new eighth edition of Douglas-Westwood’s (DW) World LNG Market Forecast expects that global capital expenditure (Capex) will total nearly $228B during the 2013-2017 period. The surge includes capital expenditure on base-load onshore and offshore fixed LNG liquefaction, LNG carriers and LNG regasification, via both onshore and offshore fixed import terminals.
Sea Trial Performance Analysis Redefined
KND Naval Design of Cape Town, South Africa successfully completed its first in class 10M Advanced Life Support Ambulance and Rescue vessel for Africa. This vessel was designed and built entirely in Cape Town. This project used HydroComp propulsion software to analyze and examine sea trial performance. Naval architect Kobus Potgieter captured a USA styled 1960’s retro ambulance look-and-feel for the boat.
