Ship Stowaways Expensive & Inconvenient Passengers
The issue of stowaways is one which has existed ever since vessels began to trade. In the twelve month period to the end of 2012 the Club handled 51 stowaway cases involving 125 persons. The total incurred value was approximately $1 million and the number of stowaways involved in each incident typically ranged from 1 to 8. However, in one particular case 22 stowaways were found among a cargo of lumber.
New Car Terminal at Marseilles Fos Port
Following a call for tenders in November last year, the Marseilles Fos port authority has chosen automotive logistics specialist TEA – part of the Charles Andre transport group - to develop and operate an import/export terminal for new cars at the Brule-Tabac quay in Fos. The decision was announced during a review of the port’s first five years under a revised management structure decreed by the French government in 2008.
French Warship Joins EU NAVFOR Operations
On Friday, December 6, 2013, the French Navy ship FS Siroco joined the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia Operation Atalanta. FS Siroco will be the flagship of the European Union’s counter piracy operation off the coast of Somalia for the next four months. Rear Admiral Hervé Bléjean is the Force Commander of the 16th EU NAVFOR rotation. Commissioned in 1998, FS Siroco is a Foudre class Landing Ships Dock ( LPDH). The ship is 168 meters long and has a displacement of 12,000 metric tons.

And with good reason since, on average, sea ice covers about 25 million square kilometers (9,652,553 square miles) of the planet—amounting to about two-and-a-half times the area of Canada. To wage ice battle, even in the earliest days of polar exploration, sailors used strengthened ships to ply icy waters.
3,000HP Tug Bound For Latin America
Marcon International, Inc. of Coupeville, Washington reported that Tiong Woon Marine Pte. Ltd. of Singapore has sold their 3,000BHP twin screw tug Tiong Woon Ocean 15 (ex-Uni Haul Ruth) to Latin American interests. The 31.0m x 9.0m x 4.5m depth / 3.5m draft tug was built in 2005 by Nanindah Mutiara Shipyard in Batam, Indonesia and classed LR +100A1 Tug, +LMC with all surveys and certificates up-to-date.
