Damen Pontoon Deliveries Ensure Stock Availability
Last Friday, April 4, a shipment that left China seven weeks ago carrying 13 new Damen Stan Pontoons and 10 other Damen vessels arrived in Rotterdam. The built-for-stock pontoons and vessels will uphold Damen’s ultra-short delivery times as demand rises - 170 deliveries in 2013. This has also led to Damen introducing newly designed barges and completing a number of custom pontoon and barge projects. Damen has sold 37 pontoons and barges in the last two years.

Dubai Water Canal Project Contract for Parsons-Halcrow JV
The Parsons/Halcrow Joint Venture (JV) informs it has been selected by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for the construction supervision of the Dubai Water Canal Project. The JV, whose initial scope of work, awarded in December 2006 was for design, has now been awarded the next phase of the project. The new scope of work includes elevating three major roads in Dubai, relocating utilities, and constructing the 2.8‑km‑long Dubai Water Canal.
ICC: Beware Spurious Oil Fraud Claims
The ICC reported that shipowners are facing new dangers from criminal gangs making spurious oil fraud claims. The “victims”/fraudsters try to extort money from owners by bringing action against them for failing to deliver cargoes of oil they allegedly own. Such scams were previously confined to West Africa, ICC said, but now appear to have spread to other countries, as a case reported recently to the ICC International Maritime Bureau (IMB) shows.
Nonlethal Equipment Prevents Robbery at Sea
Westmark BV has recently performed a test in which passive nonlethal equipment served in a multilayered strategy to protect fishing crews from the threat of robbery at sea. Until now fishing vessels operating in high risk areas have been virtually unprotected. Due to low freeboard, low speed, these vessels are a vulnerable target for heavily armed criminals. Employing armed guards is not an option for these fishing boats.
