Protecting Shippers from Ebola Outbreak
The IMO have reacted quickly in response to the international emergency recently declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) over the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. In September the IMO issued an international circular ‘3484’ calling for a united response from the shipping industry to contain the virus. Specifically it calls for ship operators to define 'measures to reduce the risk of exposure' if they are likely to have ships trading to and from ports in Ebola-affected States.

New York Man Rows to Cuba
Victor Mooney, of Queens, New York and his Brazilian built rowboat, The Spirit of Malabo, are about eight hundred miles from Miami. He must first get through Cuba. Mooney began his transatlantic row on February, 19 from the coast of Africa to honor his brother who died of AIDS in 1983 and to advocate voluntary HIV testing. This is Mooney’s fourth attempt at this feat and the furthest point he has reached. He has overcome eighty pound weight loss and a shark attack.

Repasa Puts New Stan Tugs to Work
On October 13, Repasa's ASD Tugs assisted the berthing of a LNG tanker with great success. Yesterday the two Damen Stan Tugs 1606, outfitted as line handling boats, sailed to the buoy to receive another tanker for their first mission in Equatorial Guinea. For Repasa, this is a successful start of its new joint venture with P&O Maritime. The Damen Stan Tugs 1606, Red Ant and Red Bee, are the first Damen builds in Repasa’s fleet of workboats which also includes AHT and ASD tugs.

Dyrad Releases Latest Piracy Statistics
UK-based maritime intelligence provider, Dryad Maritime has released its Q3 maritime crime figures which show that piracy is continuing across the globe at similar levels to Q2, with incidents of cargo theft in Southeast Asia continuing to rise. Dryad’s figures show a 27% drop in crime overall between Q2 to Q3, but point to the continuing attacks that are happening across the globe as reported in Q2.
Ebola Fears Hit the Maritime Market
Brazil, Argentina and the United States have tightened port entry procedures for ships that have sailed from West Africa in a bid to control the potential spread of the deadly Ebola virus. Ebola has killed more than 3,400 people in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, and its spread has become a global concern -- with worries for trade, which could affect the airline and tourism industries together with seaborne activity.
Ivory Coast Seeks Deepwater Oil Investors
Ivory Coast will seek investors in its available offshore oil acreage, including seven new ultra-deep water blocks in the Gulf of Guinea, at a promotional event in Texas next week, a senior oil ministry official said on Tuesday.
