NOAA Satellites Aid in 263 Rescues in 2012
The same NOAA weather and climate satellites that accurately tracked Hurricane Sandy’s path in October also played a key role in rescuing 263 people in 111 emergencies in the United States and surrounding waters in 2012. Since NOAA’s seven operational satellites circle the globe or sit above the United States, they also carry instruments to detect distress signals from emergency beacons carried by downed pilots, shipwrecked boaters and stranded hikers.
Galileo Satellite SAR Package Activated
Galileo’s search and rescue system (SAR) passes first space test to begin major expansion of the Cospas–Sarsat network. The second pair of Europe’s Galileo navigation satellites – launched together on 12 October last year – are the first of the constellation to host SAR search and rescue repeaters. These can pick up UHF signals from emergency beacons aboard ships and aircraft or carried by individuals, then pass them on to local authorities for rescue.

The amendments reflect recent changes made to the carriage requirements for radiocommunication equipment on ships, and include significant updates to volume III of the Manual.
Coast Guard Medevacs 1 from Sailboat in GOM
A Coast Guard aircrew medevaced a man from a 64-foot sailboat 200 miles offshore New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico, Thursday. Watchstanders at the 8th Coast Guard District command center received a call from the son, who reported his stepfather and mother were in distress aboard the sailboat Paradise beset by heavy weather. The son reported the couple were on their way back to Houston after a trip to Cozumel, Mexico.

This new side scan sonar can show extremely detailed images of even small and soft targets such as old wood wrecks, areas of scattered debris, or even a drowning victim. When the 1200 kHz was towed over a bicycle that had been disposed of in a waterway, not only were the bikes frame and wheels clearly visible, but also the seat and other features.
