Amogy Issued Feasibility Statement by Lloyd’s Register
Ammonia power solutions company Amogy informs it has been awarded a feasibility statement by classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR).Amogy has developed an ammonia-to-electrical power system that splits, or “cracks,” liquid ammonia into its base elements of hydrogen and nitrogen, which then funnels the hydrogen into a fuel cell, generating power at five times the energy density of lithium batteries. The…
Wärtsilä Books Ammonia Fuel System Order for Two Exmar Gas Carriers
Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, part of technology group Wärtsilä, will deliver the fuel supply system for Exmar’s two new medium size gas carriers that will operate with ammonia fuel. The ships are being built at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyards (HMD) in Korea for ship owner Danish shipowner Exmar LPG, a joint venture between Exmar, a multi-disciplinary maritime and offshore solutions provider, and Seapeak, one…
ClassNK Greenlights Ammonia Fuel Tank Design for GSC’s Containerships
ClassNK has awarded an approval in principle (AiP) for the design of a prismatic ammonia fuel tank (IMO Type B independent tank) for containerships developed by Planning and Design Center for Greener Ships (GSC).The Type B tank developed by GSC has been designed to ensure safe storage of ammonia and to minimize the reduction in the number of cargo containers due to the placement of fuel tanks in consideration of operational needs.Furthermore…
Researchers Warn on Eutrophication Potential of Ammonia
Switching to ammonia as a marine fuel could create new problems, according to a new study undertaken by researchers from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. The researchers carried out life cycle analyses for batteries and for three electro-fuels (hydrogen, methanol and ammonia). Eutrophication and acidification are some of the environmental problems that can be traced to the use of ammonia – as well as emissions of laughing gas (N2O)…
Alternative Fuel Newbuilding Orders Strong in January
According to the latest figures from DNV's AFI platform, it was another strong month for alternative fuel orders. This was led by methanol fueled ships, where 23 new orders were registered. Around 70% of these were in the container segment with the remainder mainly made up of vessels in the bulk and RoRo segments.LNG continues to feature strongly, with 10 more LNG fueled ships added to the database. Car carriers and tankers made up the bulk of these orders, followed by RoPax.

NYK Starts Construction of Biofuels Test Facility for Maritime Use
Japanese shipping major NYK Group has marked the start of construction of a test facility that will serve to assess the safety of biofuels and accelerate their practical application as marine fuels.NYK plans to complete the installation of the test engine in June and analyze the biofuel in combustion tests over the next three years. The test engine will be a reused generator from the tugboat Sakigake…
Designing Ships Around Emissions: The Right Path or a Fork in the Road?
When discussing ship design, the maritime industry has been tossing around a number of new terms and definitions. Sustainability, alternative fuel “ready”, digitization and lifecycle are a few of the terms becoming more commonplace amid the industry’s search for zero emissions solutions. As IMO MEPC 80 meetings push emissions reduction to meet “well to wake” requirements, we will learn much of the challenge is tied to energy and infrastructure ashore.
