Great Lakes Shipyard Performs USCG Drydocking
On April 25, Great Lakes Shipyard hauled out the U.S. Coast Guard’s 125’ x 52’ Aids to Navigation Barge (12001). Using the Shipyard’s 770-ton Marine Travelift, the yard lifted the 620-ton AToN barge quickly and easily, and placed it on drydocking blocks. Based in Detroit, Mich., the buoy tending crane barge is normally paired with the Ice Breaking Cutter Bristol Bay, and serves as a buoy tender to handle navigation buoys marking shipping lanes of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.

Great Lakes Shipyard to Build Damen Tugs
First Damen tugs to be built under license in the U.S. An agreement was signed between Damen Shipyards Group and Great Lakes Shipyard for the latter to build two Stan Tugs 1907 ICE at its facility in Cleveland, marking the first instance in which Damen tugs will be built under license in the United States, according to the Ohio shipbuilder. The ICE Class vessels will be operated by the yard’s affiliate company, The Great Lakes Towing Company, and will replace existing tonnage.

Great Lakes Shipyard Awarded Contract for Work Barges by USACE
Great Lakes Shipyard in Cleveland has been awarded a new construction contract by the United States Army Corps of Engineers for two 38-foot work barges, the company announced today. The two new steel work barges will be used by USACE Rock Island District as a working platform to perform maintenance and inspections of lock and dam 11 and 14 on the Upper Mississippi River. The barges will be 38-foot long by 14-foot wide and 3-foot deep.
Great Lakes Shipyard to Build Two Tugs for NYPA
The Great Lakes Shipyard in Cleveland, Ohio, has been contracted by New York Power Authority (NYPA) to build and deliver two new tugboats for the Niagara Power Plant’s winter operations in Buffalo, N.Y. The new tugs will augment and replace aging vessels that are used for the installation, removal and maintenance of the Lake Erie-Niagara River Ice Boom and various associated marine construction projects.

Great Lakes Shipyard Completes Winter Work
The vessels were berthed in the yard for planned repairs and routine maintenance, as well as various inspections and miscellaneous renewals. Great Lakes Shipyard also completed industrial maintenance and winter repairs at the Cleveland Bulk Terminal at the port in Cleveland, Ohio. The work included rebuilding one of the field conveyor hoppers. Carmeuse Lime & Stone operates the Port’s Cleveland Bulk Terminal, handling iron ore and limestone that arrive by ship from other Great Lakes ports.

GLS say that the addition of this cutting table expands the range of services available to its customers and greatly improves the efficiency of Great Lakes Shipyard operations, while also enhancing the quality and precision of the work being produced.

Great Lakes Shipyard Replaces Propulsion Controls on USCG Cutter
Great Lakes Shipyard is completing the replacement of the main propulsion control system on the United States Coast Guard Cutter Mobile Bay. This work marks the final installation under a five-year contract with the USCG’s Engineering Logistics Center, Baltimore, Md. This contract included installation of new main propulsion control systems for the entire fleet of nine 140-foot Bay Class of Ice Breaking tugs.

Great Lakes Shipyard was awarded a contract by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), an agency of the Department of the Interior, for the five-year drydocking and inspection of the RV Spencer F. Baird. The Shipyard hauled out the RV Spencer F. Baird using the 770-ton Marine Travelift. Work includes drydocking, a complete exterior repainting, bow thruster replacement, its five-year survey and other miscellaneous repairs. The project is expected to be complete by early November, 2013.

Great Lakes Shipyard to Build Floating Breakwater
Great Lakes Shipyard was awarded a contract by Whiskey Island Marina to fabricate a new floating breakwater. The Shipyard will fabricate two 150’ long steel cylindrical modules that will be bolted together and anchored in the lake bottom in front of the marina. The project is to be completed by mid-November. The 10-foot diameter breakwater is used for wake attenuation to protect the boats and docks in the marina basin from heavy weather and is ballasted to the 6.5’ waterline.
