LCS 16 Completes Acceptance Trials
The U.S. Navy’s next Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), Tulsa (LCS 16), has moved a step closer to deliver with the completion of acceptance trials on March 8. An industry team led by shipbuilder Austal USA performed comprehensive tests while LCS 16 was underway in the Gulf of Mexico in order to demonstrate to the Navy the successful operation of the ship’s major systems and equipment. LCS 16 will be the eighth Independence-variant LCS built by Austal for the U.S.

MCA’s CEO Massey to Retire by End 2018
Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) chief executive Sir Alan Massey announced he plans to retire from the role before the end of 2018. The Department of Transport will begin its search for Massey’s successor on March 19. Massey will continue in his role until late 2018 to allow the chief executive appointment process to take place. Massey joined the MCA in July 2010 after a 33-year career with the Royal Navy, where he left as Second Sea Lord.
Baltic Index Slips to Three-week Low
The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index fell to over three-week low due to sagging demand for larger capesize vessels. The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax and supramax shipping vessels, was down 7 points, or 0.61 percent, at 1,143 points. It fell for the fifth straight session to its lowest since Feb. 20. For the week, the index fell nearly 5 percent, registering its biggest weekly fall since the week ending Feb.

CMA CGM Expects Volumes to Remain Strong in 2018
Container shipping group CMA CGM said it expects a rebound in the industry to continue this year on the back of brisk economic growth, playing down the immediate impact of geopolitical tensions. Coast Guard Repatriates 202 Haitian Migrants
The Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma crew repatriated 202 Haitian migrants Wednesday to Cap Haitian, Haiti. The repatriation is a combination of two separate interdiction cases, which Coast Guard aircrews and cutter crews located and rescued these migrants. A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew located an overloaded 50-foot freighter Sunday approximately 30 miles east of Great Inagua Island, Bahamas.
Another Maersk Containership Catches Fire
U.S. flagged containership Maersk Kensington reported a fire in a cargo hold while en route from Salalah, Oman toward Suez. The fire is the second reported aboard a Maersk vessel this month. The fire has been contained and all 26 crew members are reported safe and accounted for, according to A.P. Moller-Maersk. The vessel is carrying 3,518 containers (corresponding to 5,616 TEU) and is currently at anchor outside the port of Salalah where it is receiving assistance from shore.
