The US Government Must Fund Icebreakers Now
Congress last funded the purchase of polar icebreakers for the U.S. Coast Guard in the early 1970s. The USCCG Polar Star (WAGB-10) was commissioned in 1976, followed by the USCGC Polar Sea (WAGB-11) in 1977. Polar Sea has been out of service since 2010 due to a major engine failure. Polar Star was ‘in commission, special’ status from 2008 through 2012 while undergoing a service life extension. It is currently the only active heavy polar icebreaker in the U.S. fleet.

Brazil Set to Auction Seven More Port Licenses
Brazil will announce on Monday that it will auction seven additional port operating licenses as part of its privatization efforts, a government source told Reuters on Monday. The licenses relate to port terminals in the northeastern states of Paraíba and Pernambuco as well as in the state of São Paulo in southeast Brazil, the source said, requesting anonymity because the auctions have not yet been made public.
CEMEX UK Orders Dredger Newbuild
CEMEX UK has signed a contract with Damen Shipyards Group to build the first in a new generation of Marine Aggregate Dredgers, the owner’s first newly commissioned dredger in 20 years. Steel cutting will take place later this year, and the vessel is expected to be delivered at the end of 2019 from Damen Shipyards Galati, in Romania. The vessel has been designed to maintain operations in North Sea conditions, with capability to extract sand and gravel from the sea bed at depths up to 55m.

I-Tech AB Signs Deal For Largest Ever Selektope Order
I-Tech AB, the Swedish developer of the bio-repellent antifouling ingredient Selektope, has signed a supply agreement with a Japanese paint manufacturer representing the largest ever single order of the technology to-date. The large volume order was placed by Japanese paint manufacturer Chugoku Marine Paints (CMP) as part of a long-term supply agreement between I-Tech and CMP to support the growth of CMP’s Selektope-containing antifouling product portfolio.
Baltic Index Falls on Capesize Weakness
The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index fell for the sixth straight session on Monday, pressured by a dip in capesize rates to the lowest in nearly eight months. The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax and supramax shipping vessels that ferry dry bulk commodities, dipped 7 points or 0.61 percent to 1,136 points, its lowest since Feb. 20. The capesize index fell 32 points or 2.66 percent to 1,171 points, its lowest level since end-July.
New Fire Rescue Amphibious Craft for Shanghai
ASIS Boats just dispatched the last Fire Rescue Amphibious craft for the order placed by a Fire Department in Shanghai. Amongst the special specifications designed for their Amphibious crafts order were a wider tube with a diameter of 565 mm, an under-deck fuel and a Honda engine filled inside the console making it discrete and safer. A special drive-on trailer was also created especially for them.
