Last week in Hamburg, Germany, SMM 2018 was held, the single biggest and arguably best exhibition on the maritime calendar globally. Cruise Ship Rescues Fishermen in Distress

A cruise ship came to the aid of a small fishing vessel that was adrift after running out of fuel about 25 nautical miles from Barbados.At approximately 10 p.m. on August 29, Carnival Fascination responded to a distress signal from two fishermen while on a seven-day Caribbean cruise that departed San Juan on August 26.The two Barbadian men, ages 43 and 51, were rescued by the cruise ship and taken on board where they received medical assistance, a hot meal and accommodations.

Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering firm Glosten has opened a new office in New Bedford, Mass. Great Lakes Iron Ore Trade Rises in August

Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes totaled 6.4 million tons in August, an increase of 1.8 percent compared to a year ago, the Lake Carriersā Association reported. Shipments outperformed the monthās five-year average by nearly 13 percent.Year-to-date the iron ore trade stands at 33 million tons, a decrease of 2.4 percent compared to the same point in 2017. The gap has been steadily decreasing over the course of the shipping season.

Baltic Index Falls as Capesize Rates Touch 10-Week Low

The cruise ship Star Pride has regained power after becoming disabled about two miles off the coast of Cuttyhunk, Mass. last week.The shipās captain reported to U.S. Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Southeastern New England at about 3:20 p.m., Friday that the vessel had lost power and was disabled.Coast Guard crews and the Buzzards Bay Task Force launched and surrounded the 440-foot, 9,975-grt cruise ship to ensure the safety of 191 passengers and 160 crewmembers on board the ship.
