Great Lakes/Seaway Iron Ore Trade Up Slightly in May
Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway totaled 6.1 million tons in May, an increase of 1.8 percent compared to a year ago, the Lakes Carriers' Association (LCA) reported. However, shipments trailed the month’s 5-year average by 5 percent. Shipments from U.S. Great Lakes ports totaled 5.7 million tons in May, an increase of 5 percent. All of those tons originated at Lake Superior ports.

Wärtsilä Canada Inc. has signed an agreement with Heinzmann GmbH & Co. KG to become Heinzmann’s Authorized Central Distributor in Canada. Baltic Index Gains on Firmer Rates for Larger Vessels
The overall index, which considers rates for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize shipping vessels, was up 3 points, or 0.37 percent, at 824 points. The capesize index was up 2 points, or 0.15 percent, at 1,381 points. "Capesize dry bulkers are continuing to see slight gains in the Atlantic basin lifting average global earnings to around $10,300/day," Clarksons Platou Securities analysts said in a note.

NORDEN Grows Its Tanker Fleet
Danish shipping company NORDEN said it has purchased a 2009-built medium range (MR) product tanker with a cargo capacity of 50,000 metric tons. The South Korean-built vessel is expected to be delivered in July 2017 and will be renamed Nord Pearl. Taking advantage of the decline in asset prices on the back of weakening tanker markets, the purchase marks NORDEN’s first tanker acquisition since the company sold three Handysize product tankers last year.
