As of September 8, 2016 the Ballast Water Convention officially was ratified by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), crossing the necessary threshold of 35% of world tonnage signed on courtesy of the ratification by Finland. Subsequently, at press time, the United States Coast Guard was moving rapidly to confirm type approval of BWMS systems, to date confirming the approval of three systems from Alfa Laval, Oceansaver and Optimarin.

SAFE Boats Names Champagne Senior VP, Operations
SAFE Boats International has appointed Hartwell Champagne as its new Senior Vice President of Operations. Champagne joined SAFE Boats in 2013 and has been a key member of the company’s executive team. Prior to his new assignment, Champagne was the General Manager of the company’s Large Craft Production facility in Tacoma, Wash. where the U.S. Navy’s Mk VI Patrol Boats are manufactured. Hartwell has been part of the defense and government contracting industries almost the entirety of his career.
Great Lakes/Seaway Iron Ore Trade Slid 0.5% in 2016
Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway totaled 54.1 million tons in 2016, a decrease of 0.5 percent compared to a year ago, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA). Shipments also trailed the trade’s long-term average by 8.3 percent. Shipments from U.S. Great Lakes ports totaled 48.9 million tons, an increase of 3.8 percent, LCA said. Four ports saw shipments rise over 2015 levels, but three ports registered decreases.

Several Milestones on US Navy, Coast Guard Builds
GE’s Marine Solutions noted that several milestones were recently marked on U.S. Navy and Coast Guard surface combatant programs that all use GE’s LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbines. On December 23, 2016, the U.S. Navy accepted delivery of the fifth Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), the future USS Gabrielle Giffords. GE will provide 20 LM2500 gas turbines for the Austal USA LCS program, part of a contract for up to 10 ships to be built by Austal USA.

Ship Operator Toisa Files for Bankruptcy
Shipping company Toisa Ltd filed for U.S. Chapter 11 bankruptcy as falling demand for the Bermuda-chartered company's oil-and-gas supply vessels left it running short of cash, according to court documents. UAE Shipyard Begins Operations as Albwardy Damen
Albwardy Marine Engineering and Damen Shipyards Sharjah have officially brought both brands together under one umbrella. Under the new name, Albwardy Damen, the United Arab Emirates-based shipyard will continue to construct newbuild steel and aluminum vessels as well as provide the same ship repair services to its marine and oil and gas customers in the Middle East. New Water Taxis Get Scania Power
