As the largest ship repair yard in the Caribbean, Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited, Couser said the yard is committed to continual investment based on customer’s needs, in markets good and bad. “The cruise market remains buoyant and upbeat with growth planned into the next few years,” said Couser.
DSC Dredge Meets with Louisiana Senator
On September 01, 2016, Bob Wetta, President and CEO of DSC Dredge, LLC, along with the other Louisiana E-Award winners, held a meeting in Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy’s office. Torched Containership Returned to its Owners
Container vessel CCNI Arauco has been returned to its owners after a fire broke out in its aft container hold on September 1. Ardent emergency response crews worked with local firefighters to extinguish the fire. Other experts from Ardent contained the situation with local authorities and worked with all parties with follow-on operations. The aft hold was partly flooded to extinguish the fire, subsequently contaminating the water in the hold.
Hapag-Lloyd Invests in its Reefer Fleet
Announcing further investment in container fleet, liner shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has ordered a total of 5,750 refrigerated containers (reefers) of the latest generation – including 5,000 x 40-foot and 750 x 20-foot units. In addition, 1,000 of the new containers are equipped with “controlled atmosphere” technology, which allows various types of fruits and vegetables to be transported for longer periods of time while maintaining a consistent quality.

Hurricane Matthew Strengthens as it Heads for US
Hurricane Matthew, the fiercest Caribbean storm in nearly a decade, strengthened as it barreled toward the southeastern United States on Thursday after killing at least 140 people, mostly in Haiti, on its deadly northward march. As Matthew blew through the northwestern Bahamas on Thursday en route to Florida's Atlantic coast, it became an "extremely dangerous" hurricane carrying winds of 140 miles per hour (220 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
Nimitz Begins Sea Trials
Sea trials for the newly refurbished U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) commenced on October 5, following a 20-month Extended Planned Incremental Availability (EPIA) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash. Nimitz entered the shipyards in February 2015 for its fifth major maintenance period and completed the largest maintenance period to date without bringing the carrier into dry dock, according to Cmdr.
Trelleborg Bears Weight of Largest Ever Offshore Facility
Trelleborg’s engineered products operation has supplied a selection of bearing solutions for the world's first floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project – Shell’s Prelude FLNG. Trelleborg has manufactured and delivered 52 vertical elastomeric bearings and 156 horizontal bearings for use on the 13 modules onboard the facility, as well as 40 turret bogey bearings to enable natural movements of the turret.
Great Lakes Limestone Trade Slides in September
Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 2,958,522 tons in September, a decrease of 9.5 percent compared to a year ago, reports the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA). September’s loadings were also 13.3 percent below the month’s five-year average. Loadings from U.S. quarries totaled 2,495,401 tons, a decrease of 14.8 percent compared to a year ago, according to LCA, and shipments from Canadian quarries totaled 463,121 tons, an increase of 35.8 percent.

The Korean heavy lift company TPI Megaline has selected ABB’s predictive OCTOPUS marine software to ensure safe and efficient operations on one of its vessels. Mega Caravan transports huge loads such as oil rigs and drill ships, ABB’s software will assist the ship’s officers so the vessel is not subject to dynamic weather and accelerations. TPI Megaline’s customers will also be able to monitor the journey from shore, via ABB’s Fleet Portal.
