Customized cable and rope specialist Cortland Company said it has received full endorsement from the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) for its inspection and testing facility in Western Australia. The facility has received ISO/IEC 17020 and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for the testing and inspection of high performance round slings and ropes used in a range of industries along with associated fittings and hardware.

Emergency Towing Vessel Contracted for Scotland
The U.K. Government’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) has awarded a five-year contract for a new Scottish Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV) to Ardent Maritime Netherlands BV, to begin on December 31, 2016. The ship is the Ievoli Black, a 70-meter towing vessel of some 2,283 gross metric tons and a bollard pull of 139 metric tons, capable of firefighting operations, anchor handling, towing, research and underwater services.

Master Marine Lays First Keel of Four-vessel Order
Master Marine said it has laid the first keel of four new 67’ x 28’ fleet boats ordered in September. Each boat will be powered by a pair of S6R2-Y3MPTAW Mitsubishi 803 HP tier III diesel marine engines to be operated at 1,400 RPM coupled to Twin Disc 5321 gears. The boats will be set up with 10,400 gallons of fuel, 4,359 gallons of potable water and 9,500 gallons of ballast water along with providing a maximum 7’-9” working draft.
Damen Delivers for Amsterdam Fire Department
The City of Amsterdam Fire Department has taken delivery of its new firefighting vessel: the Jan van der Heyde IV. C-Job Naval Architects provided the concept design for the 17.6-meter vessel. Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld executed detailed design, engineering and vessel construction. The canals of Amsterdam are more than a world-famous tourist attraction. They also form an important part of the city’s infrastructure.

US Naval Secretary Calls for 355-ship Fleet
In announcing the results of the 2016 Force Structure Assessment (FSA), U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus recommended a 355-ship fleet, including 12 carriers, 104 large surface combatants, 52 small surface combatants, 38 amphibious ships and 66 submarines. The FSA is a year-long effort which began in January that was conducted to evaluate long-term defense security requirements for future naval forces today at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va.
Great Lakes/Seaway Iron Ore Trade Up in November
Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway totaled 5.5 million tons in November, an increase of 13 percent compared to a year ago, Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) reported. Shipments were also slightly ahead of the month’s five-year average. Shipments from U.S. Great Lakes ports totaled 5 million tons in November, an increase of 19.5 percent. However, loadings at Canadian terminals in the Seaway fell nearly 26 percent to just 530,000 tons.
Conquest Offshore Partakes in Troll Solution Wreck Removal
Conquest Offshore’s MB-1 heavy lift barge was the key asset in the largest wreck removal recorded in 2016. Conquest MB-1 removed the Troll Solution jack-up rig from the seabed 30 meters deep of the Bay of Campeche, Mexico. The accident occurred back in May 2015 when the Troll Solution tilted during the positioning to carry out maintenance work related to the Caan Alf production platform, operated by PEMEX, Mexico’s National Oil Company.

World’s First Full Scale Numerical Modelling Workshop
Lloyd’s Register (LR) hosted the world’s first workshop on full scale hydrodynamic computer simulations at their Global Technology Center in Southampton last month. Ship designers from around the world came together with the aim of building confidence in the accuracy of ship scale Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling within the marine sector. This is the first time that the industry has openly compared full scale CFD with comprehensive measurements.

Conrad’s Kinkle Retires after 51 Years
Conrad Shipyard’s Johnny Kinkle has retired in December after 51-years in shipbuilding. Kinkle went to work for Conrad on December 2, 1969, and for five decades his reply to any request was, “No problem, babe.
