This Day In Naval History: May 10
1775 - American forces under Gen. Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen cross Lake Champlain and capture the British fort at Ticonderoga, New York. The US Navy has honored this action by naming five ships after the battle. 1862 - The Norfolk Navy Yard is burned before being evacuated by Confederate forces in a general withdrawal up the peninsula to defend Richmond. Also on this date, Pensacola is re-occupied by Union Army and Navy forces. Confederate forces destroyed the Navy Yard the day before.
Australia Orders Antarctic Supply Research Vessel
The Australian Government has signed a deal with DMS Maritime, a wholly owned subsidiary of Serco, for the delivery, operation and maintenance of an Antarctic Supply Research Vessel (ASRV) with icebreaking capabilities. The vessel, to be built by the Damen Shipyards Group, will form an integral part of the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) program in the coming years. China Issues Guidance on Arctic Navigation
On April 5, China issued “Guidances on Arctic navigation in the Northwest route 2015”, which provides navigation information services for international navigation ships planned navigating in Arctic waters. The Northwest Passage, a sea route connecting the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic Ocean, along the northern coast of North America, is becoming more attractive for shipping as global warming melts the ice cover and keeps the route navigable for longer periods.
Gondan to Build Second SOV for Østensjø Rederi
Gondan Shipyard announced that Østensjø Rederi AS has declared the option to build a second service operation vessel (SOV), a sister vessel to the one under construction at the shipbuilder’s facilities in Figueras. Both vessels will be chartered by Dong Energy AS for a period of five years firm, with an option for five additional years. This new contract represents the 13th unit that the Norwegian ship-owner has ordered from the yard.

Great Lakes Limestone Trade Up 7% in April
Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 1,947,263 tons in April, an increase of 7 percent compared to a year ago, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA). Loadings out of U.S. quarries totaled 1,552,490 tons, a decrease of 3.2 percent compared to a year ago, while shipments from Canadian quarries jumped 85 percent to 394,773 tons, LCA said. Year-to-date the Lakes limestone trade stands at 2,257,604 tons, an increase of 10.6 percent. Shipments from U.S.
