CMA CGM Launches Baltic Levant Express Service
Starting May 9, container shipper CMA CGM has launched the new Baltic Levant Express service, offering a direct connection between Saint Petersburg and the Eastern Mediterranean region. Dedicated to the Eastern Mediterranean region - Northern Europe trade, the new service links four major Northern European ports Hamburg, Rotterdam, Antwerp and le Havre to the main Eastern Mediterranean ports Alexandria, Beirut, Mersin and Aliaga. US Navy Asks Lockheed to Fix Littoral Combat Ships Issues
The U.S. Navy has sent Lockheed Martin Corp three requests to correct problems, including propulsion-related issues, with the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program dating back to May of last year, a Navy spokesman said on Tuesday. The ships were originally designed as a small, fast and affordable addition to the fleet, but production has been marked by cost increases and delays. Navy officials, however, say the costs have fallen sharply and the ships are performing well.
Maersk Working to Tow Safmarine Meru to Safety
Maersk Line said it is working with Chinese authorities to develop a plan to tow its severely damaged containership Safmarine Meru to safety. On May 7, the Maersk-owed Safmarine Meru was heavily damaged and caught fire after colliding with the German-owned containership Northen Jasper approximately 120 nautical miles east of Ningbo, China. According to Maersk, the fire is under control and external firefighting has concluded with fire tugs remaining nearby to observe any developments.

China scrambled fighter jets on Tuesday as a U.S. navy ship sailed close to a disputed reef in the South China Sea, a patrol China denounced as an illegal threat to peace which only went to show its defence installations in the area were necessary. Guided missile destroyer the USS William P. Lawrence travelled within 12 nautical miles (22 km) of Chinese-occupied Fiery Cross Reef, U.S. Defense Department spokesman Bill Urban said.
Marseille Fos Repeats Q1 Cargo Result
French port Marseille Fos handled 20.17 million metric tons of cargo from January to March in a near identical repeat of last year’s first-quarter result. General cargo rose 1 percent to 4.49MT led by container growth at Fos, which gained 3 percent for 263,038 teu. However, total box volumes slipped 3 percent to 304,664 teu – and by 1 percent to 2.93MT in tonnage terms - after a difficult start to the year at Marseille, where container traffic fell 27 percent to 41,626 teu.

Shell Offshore Inc. today marked the delivery of the third liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered offshore supply vessel (OSV) in Port Fourchon, La.
