Lightering operations has begunn for the tanker barge Argo sunken in Lake Erie as Unified Command responders took advantage of a favorable weather window, the U.S. Coast Guard reported. The first of Argoās eight tanks are being tapped and offloaded. The product will be pumped into a specialized container on a work barge where it will be run through a series of carbon filters to separate and remove the flammable vapors from the product.

Aiming to help accommodate unseasonably high demand, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced it has taken a number of steps to expedite traffic and decrease Canal Waters Time (CWT). The ACP has postponed noncritical maintenance work, modified bookings and assigned additional operations personnel. As a result, the canal has made steady progress, according to ACP. ACP said current wait times for transiting ships have been reduced and now stands at four days or less.

The deal has been finalized for marine and engineering services company Cammell Laird to begin work on the U.K.ās new £200 million polar research ship. The Birkenhead shipyard Cammell Laird said it saw off competition from Europe and beyond including Korea and Singapore to be selected as the preferred bidder to build the new vessel for the government-funded Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

Ardmore Shipping Corporation has taken delivery of two product and chemical tanker newbuildings, the Ardmore Chippewa and Ardmore Seahawk, signaling the completion of its initial newbuild program. The last of four vessels constructed at the Fukuoka Shipbuilding Co., Ltd shipyard in Nagasaki, Japan, and delivered to Ardmore in 2015, the Ardmore Chippewa is a 25,233 deadweight metric ton, Eco-design IMO 2 product and chemical tanker delivered November 13.
