Vard Increased Revenues 15.8% in 2014
Shipbuilder Vard Holdings Limited increased revenues 15.8% in 2014, the company announced in its year-end financial report today. On the back of very high activity at the yards and with subcontractors, VARD’s 4Q 2014 revenue rose 45.5% to NOK 4.5 billion ($587 million) from the corresponding period in 2013. FY2014 revenue increased 15.8% to NOK 12.9 billion ($1.6 billion) year-on-year, but due to higher operational expenses, FY2014 EBITDA dipped 37.5% to NOK 429 million ($55 million).
Maersk Line CEO: 11 New Ships Likely in Q2 2015
Maersk is considering ordering 11 container megaships in the second quarter of 2015, the Wall Street Journal reported today. "We need to grow with the market and increase our capacity by 425,000 containers from 2017 onward for three years," Maersk Line Chief Executive Soren Skou told the Journal. "It's very likely the first order will be 11 Triple E size ships. Maersk has not ordered new ships since 2011, when it ordered 20 Triple-E class vessels, each capable of hauling 18,000 containers.
Port of LA Container Volumes Down 22.7% in January
Port of Los Angeles container volumes decreased by 22.7 percent in January compared to January 2014 volumes, the port announced today. The port's January 2015 cargo volumes totaled 529,427 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), compared to 685,549 TEUs in January 2104. Labor strife between the International Longshore Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association, which resulted in port slowdowns and shutdowns, made a decline in container volume inevitable.
Brookings Institution Hosting Panels on LNG Marine Fuel
The Brookings Institution, a Washington D.C.-based think tank, will host a two-panel discussion on the use of LNG as a marine fuel on Tuesday, March 3, the organization announced today. The panels are part of the Institution's Energy Security and Climate Initiative (ESCI). The first panel will examine evolving policy, regulatory, and environmental factors associated with using LNG as a marine fuel. The second panel will address emerging opportunities and barriers to adoption.

In 2014, Pronomar equipped Van Oord’s offshore cable laying vessel Nexus with three drying cabinets, each responsible for the drying of eight sets of workwear. Nexus, a 126-meter Damen Offshore Carrier (DOC) 8500 cable laying vessel was delivered to Van Oord in December and is currently being finalized at Damen Shiprepair at Vlissingen, where Van Oord is building and installing the additional cable laying equipment.

Electronics Retrofit for Taiwanese Research Vessel
L-3 SAM Electronics has been awarded a contract to retrofit propulsion control and automation systems aboard the Taiwanese Navy’s Ta Kuan hydrographic and oceanographic research vessel. The 93-meter-long vessel, built by Fincantieri at its shipyard in Muggiano, La Spezia, Italy in 1995, carries out operations in domestic waters as well as the South China Sea on behalf of Taiwan’s governmental National Science Council and other research institutes.
