Saegull Maritime has announced the launch of two new computer-based training (CBT) modules, focusing on deck safety for specific types of offshore vessels that will be as useful for seasoned crew as well as newcomers.
The video training program covers deck safety for supply vessels and anchor handlers, and has been developed in response to demand from customers, according to Seagull.
Deck Safety for Supply Vessels and Deck Safety for Anchor Handlers as part of an expanding library of offshore titles from Seagull Maritime that reflect its growing presence in the sector. The topics have been prioritized at the request of customers.
Both modules draw on the STCW Code’s mandatory Part A and best offshore industry practice guidelines on controlling general deck work risks, such as the UK Code of Safe Working Practices for merchant seamen and Guidelines for Offshore Marine Operations.
Guidance from the UK Maritime and Coastguard Authority, Marine Accident Investigation Branch reports and Marine Safety Forum ‘flashes’ have also been used for reference.
“Personnel working on deck must appreciate hazards specific to offshore operations, and the actions required to be safe at all times,” says Seagull Technical Advisor and course author Chris Thompson.
"Increasingly, we have seen seafarers who are trained for deep sea vessels transferring across to the offshore sector; they will be fully trained and certified for cargo ship duties, but neither their education nor their experience at sea will have prepared them for this specialized working environment," he said.
Thompson says both modules are distinguished by high levels of video content, as part of “blended learning experience” that includes self-assessment opportunities at the end of each chapter and a final assessment.
