Meyer Turku Delivers First Ship Under New Owners
Meyer Turku handed over Mein Schiff 4 to TUI Cruises on Friday May 8, 2015, marking the first delivery from Turku Shipyard under Meyers’ ownership. The Meyer family, operators of the shipbuilding company Meyer Werft in Germany, became the 100 percent owner of Meyer Turku Oy just two days earlier on May 6. Mein Schiff 4 will be named in Kiel on June 5, before sailing on her maiden voyage to the Baltic States on June 6, 2015.
EPA Awards 10th Grader for Work on Marine Oil Spills
Oregon 10th grader Sahil Veeramoney received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 10 President’s Environmental Youth Award for his development of a novel and efficient method to clean up marine oil spills. Veeramoney, a student at Oregon Episcopal School in Portland, Oregon, developed a method to remediate marine oil spills after studying the environmental impact of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico and subsequent oil spills.
Seattle, Tacoma Prepare for Seaport Alliance
A draft of the final agreement between the ports of Tacoma and Seattle has been released, heralding a milestone in the formation of a Seaport Alliance that will unify the two ports’ marine cargo terminal investments, operations, planning and marketing. “We intend to make our organizations stronger and more sustainable to better serve our customers, grow our regional economy and address unprecedented competition facing the shipping industry,” said Don Johnson, Port of Tacoma commission president.
Resolve Hosts 'Damage Control Olympics'
The Resolve Maritime Academy hosted a day of maritime safety training exercises and competitive activities as part of the 13th Damage Control Olympics. Teams consisting of sailors and damage control service men and women competed against one another in a series of hands-on training exercises and shipboard emergency response scenarios, including interaction with live fire, smoke filled environments and a flooded ship chamber.
