ABB Improves Efficiency of World’s Largest Ships
ABB has designed turbochargers powering the largest ships in the world. First came the China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) Globe with capacity of 19,100 TEU completing its maiden voyage in February 2015. This was followed by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Oscar at 19,224 TEU. Both have engines incorporating ABB-designed turbochargers and are each the first of a series of vessels to launch in the coming months also featuring turbochargers designed by ABB.
SCH Services Anthem of the Seas in Southampton
Terminal operators Southampton Cargo Handling (SCH) are utilizing their considerable experience in handling cruise vessels to service the biggest cruise ship to call in the port of Southampton. Royal Caribbean International’s Anthem of the Seas has marked her maiden call in the port with a busy schedule of short promotional cruises showing off the impressive 168,000-metric-ton ship after she arrived from the builder’s yard in Germany.
Eastern Delivers 60th Towboat to Florida Marine
Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. delivered the M/V Bill Seymour (Hull 190), the 60th 90’ Inland Towboat to Florida Marine Transporters, Inc. of Mandeville, La., continuing its ongoing newbuild program. It was in early January 2015, when Florida Marine Transporters, Inc. signed an additional towboat, bringing the total to 63 vessels contracted over the last 10 years. Five of the most recent 90’ inland towboat deliveries to Florida Marine occurred over the past twelve months.
Cheaper Fuel to Boost Container Shipping
Lower oil prices are sharply reducing the cost of shipping merchandise from Asia to the United States and Europe as the cost of bunker fuel tumbles. Container shipping companies deal with the volatility in fuel prices by adding a separate bunker adjustment factor or fuel surcharge to their freight rates. Fuel can account for more than 60 percent of the total operating costs of moving freight across the oceans so the surcharges are one of the most important elements of total transportation costs.

GE Contracted to Service Australian Navy Frigates
GE has signed an in-service support contract with the Australian Defense Materiel Organization’s Maritime Cross-Platform Systems Program Office. Under the contract, GE will provide maintenance and logistic support services for the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) GE LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbines that power Adelaide- and ANZAC-class frigates.
