Costa Concordia Salvage Update

Work is in progress at Giglio to complete the installation of S5, the eighth of the 15 sponsons to be positioned on the starboard side of the Concordia. In the meantime, remediation activity on sponson S13 has been completed in Genoa and the sponson departed from Genoa May 31 on board pontoon MAK, having been now renamed S18. Currently there are more than 300 people working 24/7 in Giglio to prepare the wreck for the refloating phase.

The 2014 Navy Opportunity Forum paired small businesses and researchers with potential partners, funding sources, acquisition professionals and resource sponsors. Companies—small businesses in particular— were able to present their new materials, processes and manufacturing techniques to prime contractors and Navy and Marine Corps program managers. The focus of the event was the Department of the Navy’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.

Haifa Port Orders another Powerful Tug

Zamakona Yards, one of Spain's main shipbuilding and ship-repair groups, has signed a contract with Haifa Port Authority for the construction of Haifa, a Voith Schneider tug boat, to aid in port operations. The newbuilding will be powered by two MAN 8L27/38 engines with delivery set for August 2015. Haifa will be a sister to the Ilan I, which began towing and general harbor operations at Haifa Port in 2012.
Seychelles Conducts Oil Spill Exercise

A major exercise in implementing the national contingency plan for anti-pollution, search and rescue, and fire fighting was held in the waters off Mahé on 4 June. This complex exercise was carried out by a range of different agencies including the Seychelles Coast Guard, Air Force, Fire Fighting Services and Port Authority. The EUNAVFOR Atalanta Flagship Brandenburg also took part in the exercise, EUCAP Nestor experts provided support for the planning, preparations as well as its execution.
