Hapag-Lloyd and Compania SudAmericana de Vapores (CSAV) secured conditional European Union approval on Thursday for their tie-up to create the world's fourth-largest container shipping company. The merger is important for the shipping industry which hopes more deals could help it to overcome the worst slump on record. And if regulators take a soft line on any concessions required to allow the deal to proceed, this could spur more consolidation in the industry.

The increasing use of LNG as a marine fuel is further emphasized with the latest order for Wärtsilä's dual-fuel engine technology. A new cement carrier being built at the Scheepswerf Ferus Smit yard in the Netherlands will feature a six-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF main engine, making it the first bulk carrier to adopt Wärtsilä's multi fuel capability. The ship has been ordered by JT Cement, a joint venture between Erik Thun AB of Sweden and KG Jebsen Cement of Norway.

Shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) announced today that it developed an automatic spray head for painting the bottom parts of ships. According to HHI, the automatic painting spray enables the paint to spread evenly across the surface saving 20% of the paint used compared with the manual painting method where painters have to bend their necks backwards and look up to paint the bottom of the ship.

Hamburg Süd’s Cap San Lorenzo docked for the first time in the port of Rotterdam on Thursday, September 4. At the Euromax Terminal, the captain was presented with the traditional port plaque associated with a maiden call, in the presence of Port of Rotterdam Authority CEO Allard Castelein. The Cap San Lorenzo is the fourth containership in a series of six newbuild vessels for the shipping line. The ship, 333 meters long and 48 meters wide, has a capacity of 9,600 TEU.
