Total cargo shipments on the St. Lawrence Seaway have now surpassed 2013 levels by 5 percent due to strong North American import/export activity. According to the St. Lawrence Seaway, total cargo tonnage from March 25 to September 30 reached 24.4 million metric tons. Stephen Brooks, President of the Chamber of Marine Commerce, said, āSeptember was another strong month for the St. Lawrence Seaway as marine shipping helped U.S. companies export products and import much-needed materials.

Tropical Storm Simon Forms off Mexico's Pacific Coast
Tropical storm Simon formed early on Thursday off Mexico's Pacific coast, but it was projected to wheel out to sea in the coming days. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said that as of Thursday morning, the storm was about 360 miles (580 km) south-southeast of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, which was slammed by Hurricane Odile last month. Simon was moving to the west-northwest and could become a hurricane by Saturday, the Miami-based center said.

First Damen ASD 2810 Leaves for Trinidad
On July 31, 2013, ARC Towage signed four contracts at the Netherlands shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group. The newbuilding contracts with ARC Towage are the result of a special joint venture set-up for the terminal berthing services for a significant energy industry player in Trinidad and Tobago. The first Damen ASD 2810, MV Kairi, left for Trinidad, while the second vessel will leave in two weeks. The last two tugs will arrive mid-December this year.
