The Armidale Class Patrol Boat, HMAS Bundaberg, has suffered extensive damage following Monday’s fire in Brisbane while undergoing routine maintenance at Aluminium Boats Australia (ABA). The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service was quickly in attendance to deal with the incident. The intensity of the fire and difficulty of access was such that the fire was not extinguished until around 5pm. BAE Systems to Build OPVs for UK Navy
BAE Systems has been awarded a £348 million contract by the U.K. Ministry of Defense to construct three new Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) for the U.K. Royal Navy. The new 90-meter vessels will be built at BAE Systems’ facilities in Glasgow and will provide additional capability for the Royal Navy. Based on a proven design, the ships will be used to support counter-terrorism, counter-piracy and anti-smuggling operations in the waters around the U.K. and will protect other U.K. interests abroad.

NOAA: Marine Debris Costs California Millions
Southern California residents lose millions of dollars each year avoiding littered, local beaches in favor of choosing cleaner beaches that are farther away and may cost more to reach, according to a new NOAA-funded Marine Debris Program economics study. Reducing marine debris even by 25 percent at beaches in and near California’s Orange County could save residents roughly $32 million during three months in the summer by not having to travel longer distances to other beaches.

July is Best Month for US-flag Lakers in 2 Years
U.S.-flag Great Lakes freighters (lakers) moved 11,365,550 tons of cargo in July, their highest monthly total in two years. The industry’s July total also represented increases of 8.6 percent compared to June and 10.2 percent compared to a year ago. Iron ore for steel production totaled 5.3 million tons, an increase of nearly 15 percent compared to a year ago. Higher water levels did allow for some cargos to approach 70,000 tons, but even so, the vessels were still less than full.
