Milestone for Enhanced Safety in Arctic Regions
United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO) has just approved global binding regulations intending to enhance safety of navigation in polar areas. This means, inter alia, new requirements for passenger ships. Following several years of intense negotiations, the IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) has today approved a new set of regulations on navigation in Arctic waters. Thus, the IMO has today taken a decisive step towards making the so-called Polar Code internationally binding.
Konecranes to Supply 18 RTGS to DP World
In March 2014 Konecranes received a major order for eighteen Konecranes Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes from DP World’s Yarimca container terminal in Turkey. The all-electric cable reel RTGs will be delivered in 2015. Konecranes has previously delivered container handling equipment to DP World terminals in Algeria, Egypt, India and the UAE, but this order is the first all-electric RTG order for DP World. The order was booked in the first quarter 2014.
BP to Appeal Gulf Oil Spill Damages Ruling
BP Plc on Wednesday said it will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review a court ruling concerning the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, which forces the company to pay some businesses for economic damages without the businesses having to prove the spill caused their losses. On Monday, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans refused to disturb a March ruling from a three-judge panel over how to compensate businesses.
