Hydrex, Wärtsilä Partner for Subsea Repair
Last month a Hydrex diver/technician team carried out underwater stern tube seal repairs on a 110-meter offshore supply vessel in Bunbury, Australia. The rope guard covering the stern tube seal assembly was missing and the seal box had come loose after a mooring rope got tangled around the assembly. An emergency on-site repair was necessary. Hydrex therefore mobilized a diver/technician team to the vessel’s location and was able to carry out the entire operation on-site and underwater.
Ocean Safety Certified for Gas Cylinder Inspection
Independent safety supplier in the U.K., Ocean Safety, received the EC Certificate of Authorization from Lloyds Register, allowing the company to carry out all in-house certifications of gas cylinders. In accordance with the Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive 2010/35EU, Ocean Safety is now authorized to pressure test many types of cylinders including composite, welded steel, seamless steel and aluminum gas.
Grounded Vessel Refloated without Pollution
U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan and Resident Inspection Office St. Croix crews are assessing the condition of the 221-foot cargo ship MV Commander, after it successfully refloated Saturday afternoon from Round Reef, where it grounded Friday night just outside Christiansted Harbor in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The Commander is safely anchored in the vicinity of Protestant Cay in Christiansted. Initial underwater assessments have identified that the Commander’s two rudders are missing.
Zamakona Launches North Sea Emergency Vessel
The Zamakona Yards Group said it has successfully launched the vessel Ocean Marilin in its installations in Pasajes in Northern Spain on January 31. The vessel is the second which Zamakona Yards has launched of the three vessels contracted with the Norwegian shipping company, Atlantic Offshore A.S. The principal mission of the vessel will be to provide immediate attention in emergency situations to Offshore Oil Rigs and Installations.

Stanford Hawk to Support Total E&P
Stanford Marine announced from its Dubai headquarters that it has secured a five-year contract with Total E&P Angola for Stanford Hawk, the latest addition to its fleet. Total E&P Angola (TEPA) awarded Stanford Marine a five-year contract, with two two-year options, scheduled to commence by the beginning of February 2014. The Stanford Hawk will be supporting the process and storage activities of TEPA, by transporting personnel and cargo, as well as assisting in safety standby duties.
S2 Fuel Cell in Final Development Stage
Nordic fuel cell technology company PowerCell is in the final stage of development of its next generation fuel cell stack platform, the S2. The S2 covers a larger power range up to 25 kW and maintains the same tolerance towards CO and reformate gas as the present platform, the S1. The new fuel cell will have good stability and a compact and robust design for both automotive and stationary applications.
CMA CGM Launches New PAD 2 Service
The CMA CGM Group announced the upgrade of its Oceania - U.S. services with the launch of the PAD 2 service, as from the beginning of March 2014. The group said PAD 2 will complement the existing fortnightly PAD 1 service and provide CMA CGM with improved coverage of the Oceania to U.S. trade. Using its global service network, the CMA CGM Group will be able to provide weekly services to and from Australia and New Zealand, Central and South America, the Caribbean, North America (USEC) and Canada.

Report: U.S. 2013 Imports Highest in Six Years
2013 Ocean Imports Were 3.7% Higher Than 2012. Zepol Corporation (www.zepol.com) reports that U.S. vessel imports were up 3.7% from 2012, which totaled over 18.2 million TEUs (twenty-foot container) brought into the United States last year. U.S. imports in 2013 started off at a slow start but ended with a surprising and unexpected surge from July through December. Annual TEUs haven't been this high since 2007, which is a good sign for a strong recession rebound in the U.S. trade industry.
USAC, HHI Ink $2 Billion in Newbuildings
UASC Cements its largest ever newbuilding order by exercising options for six 14,000 TEU boxships. United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) announced Sunday that options for six additional 14,000 TEU vessels have been exercised bringing the total order to 16 ships. The order has been placed with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in Korea and is the largest in UASC’s history, worth over US$ 2 billion including all options.
