DNV GL to Class Two Brazilian Pipe Laying Vessels
The two pipe laying vessels (PLSVs) are to be built at the brand new Vard Promar yard in Recife, in the North East of Brazil. The order is part of four OSVs by DOF/Norskan and Technip, important customers for Vard. The other two of these vessels are to be built in Norway, also to DNV class. The new Vard Promar yard in North East Brazil represents a significant expansion of Brazil’s shipbuilding capability as more yards will be built outside of Rio de Janeiro.

Great Lakes Iron Ore Trade Up Almost 10% in October
Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes totaled 6 million tons in October, an increase of 9.6% compared to a year ago. The October ore float was also 8.8% ahead of the month’s five-year average, but trailed September by about 3%. Shipments from U.S. ports totaled 5.3 million tons, an increase of almost 16% compared to a year ago. The October total included 183,000 tons shipped to Québec City for loading into oceangoing vessels and delivery overseas. Year-to-date overseas exports from U.S.

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Corp. reports third quarter 2013 results. Dredging delivers a strong quarter with the backlog at a record high of $606-Million. The company says it is evaluating strategic alternatives for its demolition business. Revenue increased 22.4% to $198.8 million in the third quarter of 2013 compared to the third quarter of 2012, driven by the increase in coastal protection revenue and a joint Terra and Rivers & lakes remediation project.
Aker Solutions' Subsea Business Does Best in Q3 2013
Aker Solutions ASA publish their third-quarter results 2013 showing a fairly even performance in the group's sectors, but in subsea widening its profit margin to 10.9 percent from 8.7 percent a year earlier. Sales were NOK 10.9 billion in the third quarter of 2013, compared with NOK 11.2 in the third quarter of 2012. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) amounted to NOK 1.07 billion in the quarter, compared with NOK 1.12 billion in the year-earlier period.
