Port of Houston Gets New Captain of the Port
A new commander of Coast Guard units in the Houston-Galveston area & Captain of the Port in those areas has relieved his predecessor during a change-of-command ceremony in Clear Lake. Capt. Brian Penoyer relieved Capt. James Whitehead, who is retiring from the Coast Guard after 26 years of service. As the commanding officer of Sector Houston-Galveston, Penoyer will oversee multi-mission operations from maritime homeland security to maritime environmental response.
USS Nimitz Indian Ocean Shipboad Fire Extinguished
A fire aboard aircraft carrier 'USS Nimitz' (CVN 68) in the ship's electrical equipment was quickly extinguished by the ship's underway fire-fighting team. No Sailors were injured during the event or the response, and the ship and embarked air wing remain operable and in a safe, stable condition. The ship's underway firefighting team and watchstanders responded to the electrical fire, set fire boundaries and extinguished the fire. The extent of the damage remains to be determined.
Port of Red Dog: Bulk Carriers' Call of the Wild
The UK P&I Club issue information for members whose vessels call at the remote Alaskan port on the Arctic Circle. Red Dog is a port established specifically to support the associated Lead and Zinc mine. It is a very remote location of Alaska and there are no services, including no provisions, repairs, freshwater or bunkers, available. Red Dog is situated in Lat. 67 34'42" North, Long. 164 03'30" West; Northeast of The Bering Strait near the small town of Kivalina, Alaska.
