The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners inks Letter of Intent to study development of a a 28-acre site on Pier T. The project is to construct a deep-water terminal for crude oil and petroleum products including gasoline, and the port has chosen Vopak Terminals North America Inc. to study the development. The preliminary agreement between the Port and Vopak sets basic deal terms and green-lights an environmental impact study of a āliquid bulkā terminal for petroleum tanker ships.

Keppel Shipyard undertakes Singaporeās first Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) retrofit project for a VLCC. MOL Tankship Management (Asia) Pte Ltd (MOL) has awarded Keppel Shipyard with a landmark Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) retrofit project. This is the first BWTS retrofit for an existing Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) owned by a Japanese shipowner as well as the first such installation to be undertaken in Singapore.

Garioni Naval S.p.A introduce a system to deter pirates boarding a cargo vessel by ejecting steam in selected zones around the hull. The system, illustrated in the accompanying image, uses saturated steam at 20-bar, conveyed in a pipe around the upper part of the ship's hull, which can be selectively released to scare off pirates attempting to get a foothold on board. Since the steam is at 215°C the manufacturers consider it would be very difficult for pirates to continue with their intentions.

Chemical tanker 'MV Royal Grace' unexpectedly sailed out of pirate's anchorage, then assisted by EUNAVFOR warship. The pirates had held the vessel after attacking it over a year earlier, on 2 March 2012 in the Gulf of Oman. Early in the morning of 8, March 2013, ESPS Mendez Nunez was conducting counter-piracy patrols 20 nautical miles off the northern Somali coast, when she sighted Royal Grace sailing north from the pirate anchorage at a speed of 4 knots.
