Kongsberg Maritime simulation users gather to discuss key training topics. Student assessment and instructor training were hot topics of discussion at this yearâs Kongsberg Maritime European Simulation User Conference (UC), which took place in Tønsberg, Norway, 24th â 27th September. The annual UC was this year co-hosted by Vestfold University College, which recently opened a new research park featuring several Kongsberg simulators.

IMCA Publishes ROV 2011 Global Statistics

Remotely operated vehicle (ROV) statistics for 2011 have been published by the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) as an information note (IMCA R 05/12). The statistics, intended to record personnel and vehicle levels, are collected twice a year in February and August. The 2011 figures show that IMCA members had fewer ROV personnel at work in 2011 than in 2010, and that ROV personnel numbers reported in August 2011 exceeded those in February 2011 by about 25%.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda emphasized the importance of Japan's Self-Defense Force (SDF) during his fleet inspection. PM Yoshihiko Noda considered that the role of the SDF is increasing following emerging territory issues. Forty-five vessels participated in the event including ships from the United States, Australia and Singapore navies. It was the first participation of foreign ships in the MSDF fleet review since 2002, media reported.

Finlandâs Viking Line recently notched up a world first when it launched Viking Grace, the most environmentally friendly large passenger ship, at STX Finland Turku shipyard. This year's fleet for the 68th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in December reaches 60 already. 'Wild Oats Xl' the boat to beat. The boat to beat for line honours this year will be Bob Oatleyâs super maxi Wild Oats XI, skippered by Mark Richards. It was beaten into second place last year by Anthony Bellâs Investec Loyal, which won by a margin of only three minutes and eight seconds, the fourth closest finish in the history of the race.
